How to Get Transport from Lagos to Aba in Nigeria

Getting from Lagos to Aba in Nigeria is not an easy journey, especially if you don’t have your own transport. Public transport between the two cities is scarce but with some planning it is possible. The journey involves at least 2 buses and a car trip, and usually takes about 10 hours. If you are traveling during busy school or market days, it could take even longer because of added congestion on the roads. The road network between the two cities isn’t great either so this only adds to your travel time. There are no direct flights between the two cities which also adds to the problem. However, read on for advice on how you can get from Lagos to Aba in Nigeria and back again!

By Bus

The majority of the journey from Lagos to Aba will be by bus, so you need to consider which company to travel with. There are a few options, but based on feedback from other travellers, we recommend that you choose one of the following: Rangui, Chambal or North West Express. Aba to Lagos is a long journey, so you should try to get a seat near the front of the bus. The back seats are usually reserved for people who have heavy goods or livestock, and can get very stuffy and hot. Be prepared for a bumpy ride on these buses as the roads can be pretty bad, especially around the outskirts of Lagos. There are few bus stops and most of the journey is done by driving on the highway. Some of the buses also play loud music and have blaring speakers which can be very annoying. To avoid getting sick, make sure you bring some hand sanitizer, tissues and maybe some throat sweets. Pack light, as the journey is really long and the bus might not have a bathroom onboard.

By Car

If you have the budget for it, hiring a car could be a good alternative to bus travel. There are several companies that specialize in this and can be booked online. You will have to pay for the driver’s accommodation as well, so this could get quite expensive. Hiring a car is a much more comfortable option than a bus and you can choose to sit in the front or back seat. However, due to the poor condition of many Nigerian roads, this journey could take just as long as by bus. You will also have to consider road conditions and possible traffic jams.

By Train (Currently UNAVAILABLE)

The train between Lagos and Aba has been discontinued but is due to resume operations in 2020. If you want to take this option, keep an eye on the developments and plan your journey accordingly. Long-distance train travel in Nigeria isn’t as reliable as you may think. There are often issues, delays and cancellations. One of the main reasons for the termination of the Aba to Lagos train service was due to the poor condition of the track. The rails have now been repaired and the service is expected to resume in 2020.

By Shared Transport

If you are travelling on a budget, you could consider trying to share a vehicle with other passengers. There are several dedicated car sharing apps available for Nigeria, such as Carvana and Paga. You could also try to arrange a car-share with people that you meet on the road or at the bus station. However, keep in mind that you will be travelling with complete strangers and it is not always a safe option.

Tips for Travelling by Bus from Lagos to Aba in Nigeria

– If you sit at the front of the bus, you will be the first to get off when you reach your destination. This could save you some time if the bus is due to stop at a number of places along the route. – Try to avoid coming to Aba during the Eke Market (on the last Saturday of every month). This is one of the largest traditional markets in Nigeria and the roads will be very busy. – If you need to have any medication or injections, try to get them administered a few days before your journey so that you don’t miss the bus. – Bring some good reading material or try to catch up on your rest. This journey is really long and it will pass more quickly if you have something to concentrate on. – Stay hydrated and fed throughout your journey. There will likely be a few stops along the way where you can get refreshments.

Conclusion

Getting from Lagos to Aba in Nigeria can be a long and tiring journey. If you don’t have your own transport, your only option is to travel by bus. The journey can take up to 10 hours, so you need to plan accordingly. If you are travelling during the rainy season, you might want to consider taking the train. If not, make sure you keep yourself hydrated, don’t forget your reading material and try to sit as close to the front as possible.
