What is a residence permit?

A residence permit is a document issued by the immigration authorities in order for you to reside legally in Nigeria. It’s also important for foreigners who wish to work in Nigeria in order to be able to do so.

How to apply for a residence permit

The first step is to determine if you are eligible for a residence permit. The immigration officials ask foreigners who are interested in obtaining a residence permit to provide the following:  -A valid passport with at least 6 months of validity left  -A return ticket back home

-Evidence of financial self-sufficiency

-Proof of employment, such as a letter of appointment or contract

-A police report that shows no criminal record

Once you have all these items, you will need to submit them to the immigration department and they will let you know if you are eligible. If the immigration department finds that you are eligible, they will issue your residence permit and send it to your address. It is important to note that even if your application is approved, it can take up to 3 weeks for your residence permit to be issued so make sure you have everything ready before going through this process.

Applicants who are eligible to receive a residence permit

The first step is to make sure that the applicant has a valid passport and visa. If the applicant does not have a valid passport, they must have their name included in their Nigerian travel document, which can be found here: http://www.immigration.gov.ng/visa-permits/nigeria-travel-documents

The next step is to visit the immigration authority in order to get an application form for a residence permit. Remember that you must be physically present at your local immigration office during the time of application. This includes filling out all paperwork correctly and accurately before picking up your completed permit form.

The final step of this process is to submit your application form and supporting documentation by mail or in person to the relevant immigration office within 90 days from the date on which it was issued. It’s best for people who reside outside Nigeria to submit their own application form, but if you need help with this process then send it via post along with your supporting documents at: National Immigration Services Commission

Once an applicant receives a reply from immigration authorities indicating that they are eligible for a residence permit, they may pick up their permit from any appropriate immigration office as long as it is on file with the relevant department.>>END>>

Residence permits that are not eligible

If you are not a citizen of Nigeria, a person who is eligible for employment in the country without a residence permit, or someone who does not meet specific conditions, you will not be eligible for a residence permit.

The following are examples of people who are ineligible for a residence permit:

-A non-Nigerian citizen

-A Nigerian citizen who is an illegal immigrant and has been deported from their home country

-A Nigerian living in another African country and seeking to move back to Nigeria

-Someone with an expired visa

Countries whose nationals are not allowed to obtain a residence permit in Nigeria

Nigeria does not allow nationals from some countries to obtain a residence permit. The following are the countries whose nationals are not allowed to obtain a residence permit in Nigeria:

Algeria, Cameroon, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kenya, Libya, Malaysia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger Republic (Republic of Niger), Senegal (Republic of Senegal), Somalia, Sudan

Conclusion

So you finally decided to come to Nigeria and you are ready to apply for your residence permit. If you were thinking it would be an easy and quick process, then you are mistaken. The residence permit process is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it is a lengthy process that requires a lot of paperwork and documentation. If you want to come to Nigeria and live in the country legally, then make sure you are ready for the process.
