Introduction

Ghana and Cameroon are two neighboring countries sharing a rich history and cultural heritage. The people of each country are known for their culinary skills, and the two nations have collaborated on many projects in the past. In this article, we explore the rich flavors of Cameroon pepper in Ghana, a partnership between Wigmore Trading and Accra Spice Merchant Limited.

Cameroon pepper (Piper nigrum) is one of the world’s most popular spices. It is used to flavor various dishes throughout Africa and around the world. In Ghana, it is used to add flavor to traditional dishes such as yam fufu (a type of doughnut), efo sadiku (a type of soup), and akpeteshie (a type of sauce).

Wigmore Trading is a spice trader based in Accra, Ghana. They have partnered with Accra Spice Merchant Limited to market Cameroon pepper in Ghana. This partnership allows Wigmore Trading to reach new consumers who would not otherwise be able to access this spice. Additionally, it helps to promote sustainable agriculture practices by promoting the use of Cameroon pepper in local cuisine.

Cameroon Pepper in Ghana

Cameroon pepper is a hot, long-lasting pepper that is native to Cameroon. It is a popular addition to Ghanaian cuisine and can be found in most local markets.

Wigmore Trading was founded in 1997 by Ana Wigmore as a small business specializing in the importation of premium quality food products from Africa. The company has grown steadily, and now exports products to over 50 countries worldwide.

In 2012, Wigmore Trading partnered with the University of Ghana to establish an agricultural research center in the town of Keta, located near the central part of Ghana. The goal of the center is to improve crop yields and develop new varieties of peppers for commercial production.

The Cameroon pepper growing region is highland plateau located in the North-West region of Cameroon. It has an average elevation of about 2,000 meters above sea level and receives an annual average rainfall of about 600 mm. The climate is temperate with a pronounced dry season from November to March. The maincrop grows best on well drained soils with moderate fertility levels and minimum lime requirements.

The Partnership with Wigmore Trading

In December of 2018, Wigmore Trading and Cameroon Pepper Company (CPC) signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the development and marketing of Cameroon pepper in Ghana.

Wigmore Trading is a family-owned business that has been importing and exporting spices since 1884. Their products are sold in over 50 countries worldwide.

Cameroon Pepper Company was founded in 1995 as a private company with the mission to develop, produce, market and export quality Cameroon pepper products globally. They are one of the few companies that grow and produce all six types of Cameroon pepper used in African cuisine: Harissa, Aji Amarillo, Aji Dulce, Aji Verdejo, Aguacate de Cebolla and Paprika.

This partnership will allow for the development of new products based on Cameroon pepper as well as increased awareness and demand for the unique flavor profile of this spice across Africa.

The Process of Gaining Access to Cameroon Pepper from Ghana

The process of gaining access to Cameroon pepper from Ghana is a lengthy and arduous one. Traditionally, this spice was only available in Africa, but with the advent of globalization, it has become available in other parts of the world.

To get Cameroon pepper from Ghana, traders must first travel to the country’s remote and isolated regions. There they must negotiate with farmers who grow the spice in small quantities. Often these farmers are subsistence growers and do not receive a fair price for their product.

Once traders have located the necessary sources, they must transport the pepper down into the coastal cities where it can be more easily traded. Transportation costs are high, so traders must carefully weigh the benefits of selling their goods in one city against those in another.

The final step in obtaining Cameroon pepper is ensuring that it arrives at your store intact. This involves careful packing and shipping to ensure that no damage occurs during its journey.

The Importance of the Cameroon Pepper Trade in Ghana

The Cameroon pepper trade in Ghana is an important economic partnership that benefits both countries.

For the Cameroonian traders, the Ghanaian market provides a lucrative opportunity to sell their products. The traders travel to Ghana to purchase pepper seeds and then bring the pods back to their home country to be dried and packaged.

Ghana also benefits from the trade. The country enjoys a rich flavor profile thanks to its significant use of Cameroon pepper in traditional dishes, such as oxtail soup and okra soup. In addition, the spicy flavor imparts a unique taste to many Ghanaian dishes.

The Cameroon pepper trade is symbiotic: each party benefits from the relationship.

Conclusion

As we continue to explore new markets and partnerships, it is exciting to be able to work with businesses that share our values and commitment to sustainability. Wigmore Trading is a company that not only cares about the environment, but also believes in making good products from natural ingredients. Their partnership with us will allow us to bring Cameroon pepper (aka African bird’s eye chili) into Ghana for the first time, and we are excited to see how this unique flavor can be enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike.
