What is Wholesale Avocado Prices?

Wholesale avocado prices in the UK can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year. The table below lists average wholesale avocado prices for each of the UK’s four regions from January to December 2018.

The table also includes the average price per kilo for both green and Haas avocados. The green avocado is the most popular variety, accounting for around two-thirds of all shipments. The average price per kilo for Haas avocados was £1.53 higher than for green avocados, which indicates that there is a greater demand for this type of avocado.

The table below lists average wholesale avocado prices by region:

British Isles – £2.19/kg
Eire – €1.29/kg
Scottish Highlands – £2.81/kg
Wales – £3.38/kg

How Do Wholesale Avocado Prices Affect the Average Consumer?

Wholesale avocado prices in the UK can differ significantly from those found at local stores. Prices for avocados shipped in from abroad have increased dramatically in recent years, with some varieties costing up to £5 per kilo. This means that even if you only purchase a small amount of avocados each week, you may be spending a significant amount of money over time. The reasons for this increase in prices are complex and include factors such as the global avocado market, tariffs and transport costs. In order to help understand how wholesale avocado prices affect the average consumer, Wigmore Trading undertook a study of these prices across eight different counties in the UK. Their findings suggest that while price varies widely across the UK, consumers should be aware of the potential cost when purchasing avocados from elsewhere than their local grocery store.

The Process of Buying Wholesale Avocados

In the UK, wholesalers buy avocados from farms across the country. The price at which they buy avocados depends on a number of factors, including the crop yield and quality, the demand from retailers, and the availability of fruit.

According to Wigmore Trading, a wholesale avocado seller in the UK, prices for avocados vary depending on the region where they were grown. In 2017, prices for homegrown avocados in Scotland ranged from £1.30/lb to £2.60/lb, while prices for imported avocados ranged from £1.50/lb to £3.00/lb. Prices for avocado imports have increased in recent years as growing interest in healthy eating trends has led to an increase in demand for avocado products.

Wholesale avocado prices also vary depending on whether they are fresh or frozen. Fresh avocado prices range from £0.90/lb to £1.90/lb while frozen avocado prices range from £0.85/lb to £1.60/lb

The UK avocado industry

The UK avocado industry is worth £1.5 billion and employs around 25,000 people. The majority of the crop is exported, with Mexico and Spain being the main purchasers. Wholesale avocado prices in the UK vary significantly according to region, with Northern Ireland fetching the highest prices due to its favourable climate and abundance of suppliers. In contrast, Scotland tends to have lower prices as a result of its smaller production area and limited supplier base.
