Quick answer

Golden Penny pasta is made by Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN), so the only official way to become a Golden Penny distributor is to apply to FMN directly, using the “Distributor Enquiries” option on the Golden Penny Foods contact form or the company’s customer lines. FMN does not publish a fixed minimum capital. Expect to show a registered business, a warehouse and delivery capacity, and to buy in bulk. As a guide, a carton of Golden Penny Spaghetti (20 × 500g) was listed online for roughly ₦19,000–₦22,500 in September 2026.

Who makes Golden Penny pasta?

Golden Penny is the consumer food brand of Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, which began operations on 29 September 1960 and has its head office at 1 Golden Penny Place, Wharf Road, Apapa, Lagos. The pasta is milled and made in Nigeria by FMN. It is not an imported Italian product, whatever some older blog posts say (including an earlier version of this page, which we have corrected).

Golden Penny Foods currently lists these pasta lines:

  • Golden Penny Spaghetti, 500g, the best-seller and the one most shops stock by the carton
  • Golden Penny Spaghettini (slimmer strands), 500g
  • Golden Penny Macaroni, 500g
  • Golden Penny Pasta Twist, sold in 200g and 500g packs

The same company also sells Golden Penny noodles, Semovita, flour, sugar, vegetable oil and breakfast products. Many distributors carry several lines, not only pasta. That matters because FMN is likely to value a dealer who can move a wider basket.

How big is the Golden Penny dealer network?

FMN runs its trade through a network of dealers (distributors). At its 2026 dealers’ conference in Ikeja, themed “Reset, Rebound, Win Big”, the company said it is investing close to ₦45 billion in redistribution infrastructure for its dealers this year. It also said there are nearly 2,000 secondary sales points across Nigeria attached to its distributors. Top dealers received more than ₦266 million in cash prizes plus three Toyota Hilux trucks (Daily Trust; Pulse Nigeria, June 2026).

The takeaway for a new applicant: FMN already has large, long-standing dealers in most regions. You will be judged on whether you can add sales in a territory or channel it does not yet cover well, not only on whether you can pay.

The official route: how to apply to FMN, step by step

  1. Register your business. Register a limited company (or at least a business name) with the Corporate Affairs Commission. Open a corporate bank account and get a Tax Identification Number. A manufacturer will not open a trade account for an unregistered individual.
  2. Pick your territory and channel. Be specific: for example, “open markets and provision shops in Ikorodu and Agbowa”, or “supermarkets and restaurants on the Lekki–Ajah axis”. Visit shops in that area and note who currently supplies Golden Penny and how often they run out.
  3. Contact FMN through official channels only. Use the contact form on fmnfoods.com/contact-us and choose “Distributor Enquiries”. The Golden Penny store locator page also carries a “Do you want to be a distributor?” link to the same place. You can also call the published lines (02018883506, 02018883544, or the toll-free 0800 003 6455 / 0800 000 0366) or email crm@fmnplc.com.
  4. Prepare a short proposal. Include your company documents, the territory, your warehouse address and size, your vehicles, the retailers you already serve, and your expected monthly volume in cartons.
  5. Expect a visit and an assessment. Manufacturers usually inspect the warehouse, check your trade references and talk you through ordering, payment terms and the current price list. Ask for every requirement in writing.
  6. Place your first order and pay only into FMN’s official company account. Pay into an account in the company’s name, and get a proper invoice and receipt.

Important

Wigmore Trading is an independent Lagos wholesaler. It is not Flour Mills of Nigeria and cannot appoint anyone as an official Golden Penny distributor. Only FMN can do that. What Wigmore can do is supply retailers and resellers with FMCG stock and help with storage and delivery (see below).

What you need before you apply

FMN does not publish a public checklist. The list below is what FMCG manufacturers in Nigeria typically ask for. Treat it as preparation, not an official FMN requirement.

Requirement Why it matters Tip
CAC registration, TIN, corporate bank account The manufacturer needs a legal entity to invoice A limited company looks more serious than a business name
Dry, secure warehouse Pasta cartons must be kept off the floor, away from damp and pests Pallets and a clear stock-rotation system (first in, first out)
Delivery vehicles Distributors are expected to serve retailers, not wait for them Start with one van or tricycle and outsource the rest
Working capital You usually pay upfront, while your retailers may want credit Budget for stock plus 4–6 weeks of running costs
A retailer list It shows you can move volume from day one Names, locations and weekly carton estimates for 30–50 outlets
Sales and record-keeping Manufacturers track sell-out, not only purchases A simple stock and sales spreadsheet is enough to start

Based on common FMCG distributor onboarding practice in Nigeria. Confirm FMN’s actual requirements when you contact the company.

How much do you need to be a Golden Penny distributor?

There is no official published figure. FMN sets minimum order volumes privately, and they vary by region and channel. Be wary of any website that quotes a precise “Golden Penny distributor fee”. It is guessing, or it is trying to collect your money.

What you can work out yourself is the cost of the stock. Using the carton prices seen online in September 2026 (about ₦19,000–₦22,500 for 20 × 500g):

Order size (spaghetti only) Stock cost at ₦19,000/carton Stock cost at ₦22,500/carton
100 cartons ₦1.9 million ₦2.25 million
500 cartons ₦9.5 million ₦11.25 million
1,000 cartons ₦19 million ₦22.5 million

Illustrative arithmetic using retail/online carton prices. A direct distributor would buy at FMN’s trade price, which is not public and should be lower.

On top of stock, budget for warehouse rent, a vehicle and fuel, a sales rep or two, and credit you may extend to retailers. A realistic plan also keeps cash aside for a second order before the first one has fully sold through.

Worked example: the margin on a carton

Supermart.ng listed single 500g packs of Golden Penny spaghetti at ₦1,295 in September 2026. Twenty packs at that shelf price comes to ₦25,900. If a shop buys a carton at ₦21,000 (₦1,050 per pack) and sells each pack at ₦1,200–₦1,295, it keeps about ₦150–₦245 per pack, or ₦3,000–₦4,900 per carton, before transport, rent and losses. Pasta margins are thin. Distributors make money on volume, fast stock turns and tight cost control, not on a big mark-up per pack.

Golden Penny spaghetti wholesale price in Nigeria (2026)

Product Seller / location Price seen
Spaghetti 500g × 20 (carton) Jiji listing, Alimosho, Lagos ₦19,500
Spaghetti 500g × 20 (carton) Chomart vendor, Warri ₦19,012 (discounted from ₦19,500)
Spaghetti 500g × 20 (carton) MyKiaKia (online) ₦21,000
Spaghetti pack of 20 (carton) CBN Coop Mall vendor, Garki, Abuja ₦21,900
Spaghetti 500g × 20 (carton) Jiji listing, Port Harcourt ₦22,500
Spaghetti / Macaroni / Spaghettini 500g (single pack) Supermart.ng ₦1,295

Prices observed on seller pages in September 2026. They include each seller’s margin and are not FMN’s distributor price.

What affects the price you pay

  • Wheat and the naira. Most of the wheat used in Nigerian pasta is imported, so exchange-rate moves feed through to carton prices.
  • Where you are. Cartons usually cost more the further you are from major distribution hubs, because of haulage.
  • How many you buy. Buying 50+ cartons gives you room to negotiate. Buying one carton online does not.
  • Season. Demand rises around festive periods and school resumption, and prices can move with it.

No direct account yet? Start as a sub-distributor or stockist

Most people who search “golden penny distributor” do not start with a direct FMN account. They begin by buying from an existing dealer or wholesaler, build a base of retailers, and approach the manufacturer once they can show steady volume. The routes compared:

Route Who you buy from Capital needed Best for
Direct FMN dealer Flour Mills of Nigeria Highest (set by FMN) Established traders with warehouse and trucks
Sub-distributor An existing FMN dealer Medium Growing traders covering a local area
Wholesale stockist A multi-brand wholesaler Lowest Shops and resellers who want a mixed basket

If you are going the stockist route, pair pasta with other lines that sell every day. Our provision shop items list and fastest-selling commodities in Nigeria guides show what moves. You can also order mixed cartons from Wigmore Wholesale online. For running the business side, see how to distribute provisions without losing margin.

Checklist: before you pay any supplier

  • Visit the warehouse or shop in person, or have someone you trust do it.
  • Check the carton: FMN branding, batch number and best-before date, intact seal, no damp or crushed corners.
  • Get a written invoice with the company name, RC number and bank details that match.
  • Start with a small order and scale up once delivery and quality are proven.

How to avoid Golden Penny distributorship scams

Well-known brands attract fake “distributorship” offers. The usual warning signs:

  • A “registration fee” or “form fee” paid to a personal account. FMN’s official contact route costs nothing to use.
  • Guaranteed income claims, such as “earn ₦2 million monthly”. No manufacturer guarantees distributor profits.
  • Websites that are not FMN’s. Golden Penny’s real sites are fmnfoods.com and fmnplc.com. Treat other “goldenpenny…” domains and social-media pages as suspect until proven.
  • Prices far below market. A carton at half the going rate is usually fake, expired or never delivered.
  • Pressure to pay today. A genuine onboarding process takes weeks, not hours.

Scammers also impersonate wholesalers. Wigmore publishes its official channels on its safety page. Check it before paying anyone who claims to represent us.

Distributing other brands too?

The same principles apply to other FMCG manufacturers. See our guides to becoming a distributor for Indomie noodles and a Coca-Cola distributor in Nigeria. If you are a manufacturer or foreign brand looking for a Nigerian or Ghanaian distributor, you can appoint Wigmore as your distributor. On a trial shipment, Wigmore pays for clearing, warehousing and market research, and the brand pays the freight.
