Transit Visa for Nigerians Through the UK (2025 Guide)

✅ Who Needs a UK Transit Visa?

As a Nigerian citizen, you generally need a visa to transit through the UK, unless you meet very specific exemptions (see below).

🧾 Types of UK Transit Visas

1. Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV)

  • For passengers not passing through UK border control.

  • You stay in the airport transit area only.

  • Used when changing flights in the same airport (e.g., Heathrow Terminal 3 to Terminal 5).

2. Visitor in Transit Visa

  • For travelers who need to pass through UK border control, or if:

    • You have a long layover and want to change airports.

    • You will be staying in the UK for less than 48 hours before departing to your final destination.

🛂 Exemptions from Transit Visa

You may not need a transit visa if all of the following apply:

❗ Note: This exemption does NOT apply if you’re refused entry in your final destination or your documents aren’t in order. When in doubt, apply for a transit visa.

📋 Requirements for UK Transit Visa (for Nigerians)

✅ Common Documents:

  • Valid Nigerian passport

  • Confirmed flight bookings (showing entry and exit through the UK)

  • Visa or entry permit for the final destination country (if required)

  • Evidence of funds for your journey

  • Proof of onward travel within 48 hours

📝 Application Process

Step 1: Apply Online

Step 2: Pay the Visa Fee

  • DATV: £35

  • Visitor in Transit Visa: £64

Step 3: Book Biometrics Appointment

  • Appointments are made through TLScontact in Abuja or Lagos.

Step 4: Attend Visa Appointment

  • Bring all supporting documents.

  • Your biometric data (photo + fingerprints) will be taken.

🕒 Processing Time

  • Typically 15 working days, but express service may be available at extra cost.

  • Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your travel date to avoid delays.

🚫 Important Rules

  • Transit visas do not allow you to work or study in the UK.
