Transit Visa (C-1) for Nigerians: Overview

✅ Who Needs It?

You need a C-1 Transit Visa if:

  • You are a Nigerian citizen.

  • You are passing through a U.S. airport or port on your way to a third country.

  • You are not eligible for the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (Nigerians are not).

📋 Requirements for C-1 Visa for Nigerians

1. Valid Passport

  • Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in the U.S.

2. Confirmed Travel Itinerary

  • Proof that you are transiting through the U.S. on your way to another country (e.g. flight bookings).

3. Visa to Final Destination

  • If required, you must show that you already have a visa to your destination country (if applicable).

4. Evidence of Financial Support

  • Documents to show you have sufficient funds to cover your journey.

5. Ties to Nigeria

📝 Application Process

Step 1: Complete DS-160 Form

Step 2: Pay the Application Fee

  • USD $185 (non-refundable), payable online or at designated banks.

Step 3: Schedule Visa Interview

  • Schedule an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or U.S. Consulate in Lagos.

Step 4: Attend the Interview

  • Bring all supporting documents, including:

    • DS-160 confirmation page

    • Passport

    • Visa appointment confirmation

    • Financial documents

    • Travel itinerary

🕒 Processing Time

Typically 7–21 business days, but may vary. Apply well in advance of your travel date.

🔁 Multiple Entry?

Most C-1 visas are single-entry, meaning you’ll need a new visa for each transit unless otherwise specified.

🚫 Important Notes

  • You cannot leave the airport unless your layover is long and you’re granted temporary entry.

  • Do not attempt to use a transit visa for tourism — it is strictly for connecting flights through the U.S.
