A dashboard warning light is a prompt to understand your vehicle’s condition. For drivers in Lagos and across Nigeria, the immediate question is usually whether it is safe to continue, arrange an inspection or recover the vehicle. The answer depends on the exact symbol, message and model: a photograph of a similar icon online cannot replace your owner’s handbook.
Read the symbol and the accompanying message
Note the colour, whether the light is steady or flashing, when it appeared and any change in driving behaviour. Some indicators illuminate briefly during the normal start-up check. A light that remains on after starting, or appears while travelling, needs interpretation against the handbook for that vehicle and model year. Do not assume that every red icon means the same thing, or that an amber warning can always wait.
| Warning area | Practical response |
|---|---|
| Oil pressure or an urgent lubrication message | Stop safely, switch off as instructed by the handbook and obtain professional advice. Low pressure is different from a routine oil-service reminder. |
| High engine temperature | Stop safely and follow the handbook. Do not open a hot pressurised cooling system. |
| Brake warning or abnormal pedal behaviour | Check the displayed instruction; arrange immediate professional advice if the warning persists or braking changes. |
| ABS, airbag or stability-system warning | Arrange diagnosis. A running engine does not establish that safety assistance works correctly. |
| Charging-system or engine warning | Read the exact message and symptoms. Agree inspection or recovery with a qualified repairer rather than guessing a replacement part. |
Prepare useful information for the workshop
Record the make, model, year, engine type and mileage. Photograph the warning while stationary and describe what happened just before it appeared. Mention a recent battery replacement, service, water exposure or repair. Do not disconnect a battery or erase fault codes merely to hide the warning: the workshop may need that information to identify the underlying problem.
Warning lights when buying a used car
Ask the inspector to observe the start-up sequence and confirm that warning indicators have not been disabled. A diagnostic scan should be interpreted alongside the mechanical inspection, service history and road test where safe. A clean dashboard at handover is not a substitute for checking tyres, brakes, structural condition and previous repairs. Resolve material faults before paying or accepting delivery.
How Wigmore Trading can assist
Wigmore accepts enquiries for vehicle sourcing, replacement-part procurement and delivery planning in Nigeria. Tell us whether your requirement concerns a purchase inspection, a specific part or vehicle movement. The available workshop, diagnostic and recovery scope must be confirmed for the location; this page does not promise an emergency response time. Send a redacted vehicle specification and the repairer’s written parts recommendation when requesting a quotation.
Questions drivers often ask
Can I drive with a warning light? Only the correct handbook and a qualified assessment of the fault can answer that safely. Stop for urgent instructions or unsafe symptoms. Will changing the battery solve it? A battery may be one possibility, but replacing parts without diagnosis can leave the actual fault unresolved. Can I send a dashboard photo? Yes, as part of an enquiry, but a photo cannot establish roadworthiness or replace an inspection.
For model-specific examples, consult the manufacturer’s warning-light guidance and the handbook supplied with your vehicle. The manufacturer’s instructions take priority over this general planning guide.
