About

Where this comes from

Built directly from the NUPRC Nigerian Upstream Concession Situation Report dated 1 April 2026 — nothing added, nothing estimated.

What do the licence types mean?
PEL — Petroleum Exploration Licence, for seismic and data acquisition only. PPL — Petroleum Prospecting Licence, the exploration and appraisal stage under the Petroleum Industry Act. PML — Petroleum Mining Lease, the production stage under the PIA. OPL and OML are the pre-PIA equivalents (Oil Prospecting Licence and Oil Mining Lease) that remain in force until converted. The PIA 2021 introduced the PPL/PML regime, which is why you'll see blocks marked "conversion in progress".
What does the contract type column mean?
JVC is a joint venture, typically with NNPC holding a majority. PSC is a production sharing contract, common in deep offshore. SR denotes sole risk, where the holder carries the full cost and risk. The contract type shapes who pays for what and how production is shared.
How current is this?
It reflects the register as published for 1 April 2026. Concession status changes continually — extensions are granted, blocks are converted, interests are farmed in and out, and expiry dates move. Treat this as a research starting point and verify anything material directly with NUPRC before relying on it.
Why do some blocks show no expiry date?
Because the register records something else in that field — most commonly "conversion in progress", where a block is moving from the old OPL/OML regime to a PIA-era PPL or PML, or a note that an optional extension is being processed. We've kept the register's own wording rather than guessing a date.
Can I rely on the equity splits?
They're reproduced as published. Equity changes through farm-ins, divestments and assignments, and the register may lag a completed transaction. Where a percentage was not stated in the source, we've left it blank rather than inferring one.
Who is this for?
Anyone who needs to know who holds what: service companies and suppliers mapping their market, investors and analysts screening opportunities, lawyers and advisors doing preliminary diligence, journalists and researchers, and students of the Nigerian energy sector. It's free and there's no sign-up.
