Most Nigerians first heard of Obi Cubana in July 2021, when his mother’s burial in Oba went viral. BusinessDay reported that friends and associates gave 346 cows, 72 goats and 20 sheep. The same report said he pledged ₦1 million each to 300 young people in his community to start businesses. Videos of guests spraying cash spread widely online, and many commentators asked where the money came from.
In November 2021, Nigerian media reported that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was questioning him. Legit.ng reported the investigation concerned alleged money laundering and tax fraud. The Guardian reported that he spent days in custody and was released on administrative bail. At the time, Legit.ng also noted conflicting reports about when exactly he was freed. We found no report in reputable media that he was charged with an offence.
