What does a crate of beer cost in Nigeria?
Honestly? It depends on the week. Brewery trade prices, excise duty and the naira have all moved repeatedly — so instead of publishing figures that go stale, this page gives you a calculator that works out cost per bottle, crates per event and your retail margin from today’s actual price.
The short answer
- There is no single price. A crate costs different amounts at a depot, a distributor, a supermarket and a bar — and different amounts in Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt.
- Prices have moved a lot. Brewery trade prices have been revised repeatedly in recent years, alongside excise changes and a much weaker naira raising the cost of imported barley, glass and aluminium.
- Standard crate is usually 12 × 60cl for large bottles, or 24 × 33cl for small ones — check which you’re being quoted, because per-bottle cost differs sharply.
- The useful number is cost per bottle, not per crate. That’s what lets you compare offers and set a resale price.
- Ask for a current trade price. Any published list, including one we might write, is out of date the moment a brewer moves.
This guide used to carry naira figures for each brand. We’ve removed them deliberately. Beer prices in Nigeria have changed repeatedly since those numbers were written, and a stale price list is worse than no price list — it sends people to budget a party or price a bar menu on figures that no longer exist. What actually drives the price of a crate.
Understanding these tells you when to expect an increase — and when a quote is genuinely competitive.
Brewery trade price
The base everything else builds on. Brewers revise it periodically, and increases pass down the chain within weeks.
Excise duty
Beer carries excise, and revisions feed almost directly into shelf price. Policy changes here move the whole market at once.
Exchange rate
Barley, hops, glass and aluminium are largely imported or dollar-priced. A weaker naira raises brewing costs regardless of local demand.
Distance from depot
Haulage is real money on a heavy, low-value-per-kilo product. The further from the brewery or depot, the higher the landed cost.
Where you buy
Depot and distributor pricing sits well below supermarket, which sits below bar and hotel. Compare like with like.
Season
December, Easter and major events tighten supply and lift prices. Buying ahead of the rush is the simplest saving available.
Returnable bottles and crates usually carry a deposit, and whether a quote includes it makes a substantial difference to what you actually pay upfront. Always ask whether a price is inclusive of empties, and what you get back on return.
Depot, distributor, supermarket or wholesaler?
Each route suits a different buyer, and the right answer depends mostly on how much you’re buying and how often.
- Brewery depots and authorised distributors give the keenest pricing for genuine volume, but usually expect minimum quantities and your own transport.
- Wholesalers — including us — sit between depot pricing and retail, and typically deliver, which removes the transport problem and the day spent collecting.
- Supermarkets are convenient for a crate or two and often run genuine promotions, but rarely competitive for a bar or an event.
- Online marketplaces suit small consumer orders; check delivery cost, which frequently erases the saving on heavy goods.
