What is the “best” alcoholic drink in Nigeria? It depends on budget and occasion. Beer and stout dominate everyday drinking. Orijin and Smirnoff products are the value spirits. Four Cousins is the default party wine. Jameson and Hennessy are the go-to premium bottles at celebrations. For deeper price guides, see Four Cousins wine prices, Jameson prices and variants and the Martell cognac price list.
Watch out for fakes. Premium spirits are the most counterfeited drinks in Nigeria. Check seals, labels, NAFDAC numbers and the seller before paying. Our guide on how to identify fake alcohol in Nigeria walks through each check.

Traditional Nigerian drinks
Many Nigerians drink these daily, and they are not sold by brand. Prices depend on the vendor, the quantity and the city, so we do not quote a national figure.
| Drink | What it is | Alcoholic? | Where it is popular |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zobo | Hibiscus (roselle) infusion, often with ginger and pineapple | No | Nationwide |
| Kunu | Millet, sorghum or tiger nut drink | No | North, now nationwide |
| Fura da nono | Millet balls in fermented milk | No | North |
| Tiger nut drink (kunu aya) | Blended tiger nuts, dates and coconut | No | Nationwide |
| Palm wine | Fermented palm sap | Yes, and it gets stronger as it ferments | South-East, South-South, South-West |
| Burukutu / pito | Fermented sorghum or millet beer | Yes | North, Middle Belt |
| Ogogoro | Distilled palm spirit | Yes, very strong | South |
Safety note: buy zobo and kunu from clean, trusted vendors and keep them refrigerated, because they spoil fast. Unregulated ogogoro can be dangerous if badly distilled, and home-brewed spirits have been linked to methanol poisoning. Buy registered products only.
2026 rule change: the sachet alcohol ban
From 1 January 2026, NAFDAC banned alcoholic drinks sold in sachets and in containers below 200ml. In July 2026 the agency began a nationwide enforcement drive across markets, motor parks, bars and shops. In September 2026 it ordered a nationwide recall, with manufacturers bearing the costs.
What it means for retailers: do not stock sachet gin or mini PET bottles of spirits under 200ml. NAFDAC has warned that possession or sale can lead to seizure and prosecution. Smaller spirit bottles of 200ml and above, such as 20cl gin, are outside the ban as reported.
Buying drinks for a shop or event: a checklist
- Know your crowd. Plan roughly two-thirds soft drinks, malt and water to one-third alcohol for mixed family events. Adjust for your guests.
- Buy by the pack. Twelve- and 24-packs cut the unit price. For example, Coca-Cola 50cl is ₦490 a bottle in a 12-pack.
- Check expiry dates on delivery, especially on juices and malts.
- Get an invoice from a seller with a physical address.
- Inspect seals on every spirit bottle.
- Plan chilling. Ice and coolers can cost as much as a crate of soft drinks at a big event.
