Know before you charter

The four ways to hire a ship.

The right charter type depends on whether you need one voyage, a vessel for a period, or full control of it.

OPTION 1

Voyage charter

Hire the vessel for a single, defined voyage from A to B. You pay a rate for the trip; the owner runs and crews the ship. Simplest for a one-off shipment.

OPTION 2

Time charter

Hire the vessel (and its crew) for a period — weeks, months or years. You direct where it trades and pay a daily hire rate plus fuel and port costs.

OPTION 3

Bareboat charter

Hire the vessel alone, without crew, for a longer term. You take on full operational and commercial control — closest thing to owning it, without buying.

OPTION 4

Contract of affreightment

Contract to move a set quantity of cargo over time across multiple shipments, with the owner providing suitable tonnage each time. Good for ongoing volumes.

Why charter through Wigmore

A trading house at the quayside — not just a broker on email.

We book vessels as part of moving real cargo every day, and we know the regional market.

Regional market knowledge

We know which tonnage actually trades West African ports and creeks — not just what looks good on a global list.

End-to-end logistics

Chartering ties straight into our shipping, customs and warehousing — one chain, not five vendors.

We source the cargo too

Need the goods as well as the ship? Our sourcing desk can find and buy, then we move it.

Honest, written quotes

No made-up rates off a web page. We confirm real availability and price for your route and laycan, in writing.

Straight answers

Chartering questions, answered.

Why don’t you show charter rates on this page?
Because an honest rate doesn’t exist in the abstract. Charter hire moves constantly with the route, vessel type and size, laycan, bunker (fuel) prices and how tight the market is that week — a number posted on a page would be wrong by the time you read it. Instead we take your specifics and come back with a real, written quote you can rely on.
What does “regionally chartered” versus “global” mean here?
It’s a practical guide to where the vessel usually comes from. Green means that type and size regularly trades in and around West Africa, so it’s typically quicker to fix locally. Amber marks specialist tonnage that’s more limited. Blue means it’s chartered on the international market and positioned in — which we arrange. Actual availability always depends on the market at the time, and we confirm live tonnage per enquiry.
Can you really charter a livestock (animal) carrier?
Yes — live-animal carriage uses purpose-built or specially converted vessels with pens, ventilation and feed and water systems, and it’s a specialist trade. It’s also tightly governed by animal-welfare regulations covering stocking density, ventilation, veterinary provision and voyage conditions. Tell us the species, headcount and route and we’ll advise on suitable, compliant tonnage — this is exactly the kind of specialist fix worth talking through early.
I don’t know which vessel I need — can you just advise?
Absolutely. Tell us the cargo, the quantity and the two ports, and we’ll tell you the right vessel type and size — that’s the whole point of the tool and the desk behind it. Leave the vessel field on “please advise” in the enquiry builder and describe your cargo instead.
Do you handle the whole move, or only the ship?
As much or as little as you want. Chartering connects directly to Wigmore’s shipping and freight, customs clearing and warehousing — and if you also need the goods sourced and bought, our sourcing agent can do that first. One chain, one point of contact.
Are the size classes on this page exact?
They’re the standard industry categories and typical size ranges used across shipping, given as a guide to help you talk to the desk in the right terms. Individual ships vary — a specific vessel’s deadweight, dimensions, gear and tank arrangement are confirmed when we identify real tonnage for your enquiry.

This tool is a general guide to vessel types and standard industry size classifications; typical size ranges are indicative and the exact specification of any individual vessel varies. Availability indications (regional / specialist / global) are practical guidance only and depend on market conditions at the time of enquiry. Charter rates are not shown because they fluctuate with route, vessel, laycan, bunker prices and market supply; Wigmore Trading confirms real availability and pricing in writing for each enquiry. Wigmore acts to arrange and broker suitable tonnage on the client’s behalf; charter parties and their terms are agreed between the contracting parties. Livestock carriage is subject to applicable animal-welfare regulations and specialist requirements. This page does not constitute a binding offer of any vessel or rate.
