The right crabgrass killer for lawns must control the weed without unacceptable injury to the turf you want to keep. The same question applies to foxtail grass and barnyard grass: identify both the unwanted grass and the lawn before buying a spray. A general grass killer can damage both.

For groundskeepers, landscapers, schools, estates and agro-dealers in Nigeria, Wigmore Trading offers a route to discuss product sourcing and supply requirements. Send clear photographs and site details so the enquiry starts with the weed problem rather than an assumed product. We do not treat an overseas lawn recommendation as proof of local product approval.

Identify the grass before choosing a crabgrass herbicide

Crabgrass commonly refers to Digitaria species; “foxtail” can refer to several grasses with brush-like seed heads. Barnyard grass is often Echinochloa crus-galli. These names are useful starting points, but a photograph of the seed head, leaf, stem base and whole patch is more useful than a common name alone. Some grass lookalikes need a different approach.

Crabgrass is an annual grass. Management must address the current plants and future seedlings. A lawn that becomes bare after spraying can allow another flush of weeds. UC IPM’s crabgrass guide emphasises maintaining competitive turf alongside treatment. Do not copy a North American spring calendar into a Nigerian rainy-season maintenance plan; local emergence and lawn growth matter.

Prevention and established-weed treatment are different purchases

What you can see What to ask a supplier
No emerged weeds, but a known recurring problem Is a registered pre-emergence product appropriate, and how does it affect reseeding?
Small grass seedlings Is the product labelled for that species, stage and turf?
Large established clumps Would removal and turf repair be more practical than spraying?
Mixed weeds and damaged lawn Can the grasses be identified before any chemical is selected?

A crabgrass spray intended for emerged weeds is not automatically a seedling-prevention product. Conversely, a preventer will not necessarily remove mature plants. Ask what the exact formulation controls at the stage present on your site. Avoid combining products simply because the labels mention different weeds; mixtures require label permission and competent advice.

What kills foxtail but not grass?

There is no universal answer because foxtail is itself a grass. Selectivity depends on the weed species, turf species, product and growth stage. A spray that can be used around broadleaf ornamental plants may still injure a grass lawn. If you cannot identify the turf, do not blanket spray it while waiting for an answer.

Remove isolated plants before they spread where practical, collect mature seed heads carefully, and avoid carrying contaminated soil or clippings to clean areas. Review mowing, compaction and irrigation with a local turf professional. The goal is a surface that recovers after weed removal, rather than a larger bare patch that repeatedly needs treatment.

How to get rid of barnyard grass

Start by mapping the affected patches and checking the growing conditions. Ask whether the problem is confined to a lawn, appears around drainage edges, or is actually in a rice or other crop field. Those are separate treatment sites. A lawn recommendation should never be transferred to a food crop or a wetland without the exact approved use.

For larger infestations, plan access restrictions, neighbouring vegetation protection and turf repair before ordering. If a label specifies irrigation, mowing or reseeding restrictions, build them into the work programme. The cheapest product can become expensive if it prevents the planned renovation or damages nearby planting.

Prepare a quotation that gets a useful answer

Send Wigmore Trading the delivery city and country, site area, lawn species if known, close-up and wider photographs, weed size and previous treatments. State whether you need one pack for maintenance or repeat wholesale supply. Request the proposed product label, approved target weeds, pack sizes, availability, price and delivery terms in writing.

For a contractor tender, specify the expected outcome as reduced weed pressure plus a follow-up inspection. Avoid promising instant or permanent eradication from a single application. Include the cost of removing dead plants and repairing the lawn, and agree who is responsible for those tasks.

Related problems and common questions

Is dallisgrass the same as crabgrass? No. See our dallisgrass, quackgrass and Johnsongrass guide before purchasing. Can I use a non-selective spray on the whole lawn? It can damage desired turf; compare selective and non-selective herbicides first. When should I spray? Follow the product’s weather and lawn-use directions, explained in our application planning guide.

If the patches contain small, flat leaves rather than grass blades, read our spurge, purslane, clover and oxalis guide. Accurate identification is the most valuable first step in a sensible weed-control purchase.

Technical references explain plant biology and general principles. Overseas product examples or seasonal calendars do not establish approval for use in Nigeria or another destination. Always follow the current locally approved label.
