If a grass weed returns after cutting or spraying, buying another bottle without checking the plant can repeat the same failure. Dallisgrass, quack grass and Johnsongrass are distinct weeds. Their growing habits, the plants around them and the approved product label determine the options. A dallisgrass killer is not a universal treatment for every unwanted grass.
Wigmore Trading supports sourcing enquiries for agricultural and grounds-maintenance products in Nigeria and other destinations. For persistent weeds, our first request is a clear description of the site and plant. A realistic supply brief includes follow-up work and recovery of the area, not simply the strongest available chemical.
Check whether you have the right name
Dallisgrass is Paspalum dilatatum. Quackgrass is commonly Elymus repens, while Johnsongrass is Sorghum halepense. Common names vary by country, and a buyer searching “quack grass” may actually have another creeping grass. Supply photographs of the seed head, leaf collar, stem base and any underground growth uncovered during ordinary inspection. Do not identify an entire infestation from one distant lawn photograph.
UC IPM describes dallisgrass as a difficult perennial weed. This matters because cutting the visible leaves is different from removing an established plant. An annual grass problem such as crabgrass needs a different prevention plan; see our annual grass weed guide if the identification remains uncertain.
Why repeated top-growth removal can disappoint
Persistent grasses can survive through established crowns or underground structures. A patch that looks cleared may not be eradicated. Treatment records should distinguish temporary suppression, death of the current plant and prevention of new growth. New seedlings after a successful treatment do not necessarily mean the same plant survived.
Avoid moving infested soil or plant fragments into a clean bed. Before cultivating a large patch, discuss the weed’s growth habit with a local agronomist: soil disturbance can complicate some perennial grass problems. Record where patches appear and where mowing or earthmoving equipment travels between sites.
Choosing a quackgrass killer or Johnsongrass treatment
Ask whether the target grass and use site appear on the proposed label. A product selective against grasses around certain broadleaf crops is not automatically selective within a lawn. Likewise, a non-selective systemic product may affect the turf, crop or ornamental plants that receive it. Product concentration does not solve this selectivity problem.
If the site is a crop field, state the crop, growth stage, harvest plans and any intended grazing. For a lawn, identify the turf and whether spot renovation is acceptable. For an industrial site, describe nearby drains, planted boundaries and public access. Each answer changes what a responsible supplier needs to check before making a recommendation.
| Option to assess | Planning implication |
|---|---|
| Remove isolated clumps | Budget for root/crown removal, disposal and repair |
| Labelled selective treatment | Check exact crop or turf tolerance and weed stage |
| Labelled non-selective spot treatment | Protect wanted plants and allow for dead-patch repair |
| Renovate a heavily infested area | Agree how follow-up growth will be managed before replanting |
How long should control take?
There is no reliable single timeline across these weeds and all formulations. Weather, plant condition and treatment method affect the result. Follow the label’s assessment and repeat-treatment directions, and avoid increasing the rate because leaves have not changed colour quickly. A scorched leaf is not proof that underground growth has died.
For contracts, schedule a documented inspection after the product’s appropriate assessment period. Photograph the same patches, note new shoots and separate surviving plants from fresh seedlings. Ask the contractor what further action is included in the price. A blanket promise of permanent control after one visit is not a sound purchasing specification.
What to send Wigmore Trading
Provide your country and delivery city, site size, weed photographs, crop or lawn species, previous active ingredients used and the intended application method. Say whether the enquiry is for a farm, estate maintenance programme, agro-dealer resale or contractor project. Request proposed pack sizes, approved label, availability and delivery terms before payment.
For overseas supply, the product must be acceptable in the destination market and transport route. A product marketed for Johnsongrass abroad is not automatically registered for the same use in Nigeria. Review our wholesale herbicide sourcing guide and selective versus non-selective comparison as part of procurement.
Avoid these common buying mistakes
Do not choose by the grass’s colour alone, treat all grass weeds as crabgrass, or assume a “lawn weed killer” covers every turf variety. Do not mix products to compensate for an uncertain diagnosis. Check weather, re-entry and replanting instructions before scheduling work. A correctly specified product with a practical follow-up plan is more useful than a large pack bought on an unsupported guarantee.

Technical references explain plant biology and general principles. Overseas product examples or seasonal calendars do not establish approval for use in Nigeria or another destination. Always follow the current locally approved label.
