Grubs are insect larvae. In lawn-care discussions, “white grubs” usually refers to the immature stage of certain beetles; some feed on grass roots. They are not weeds, so a weed killer is not a treatment for a grub infestation. If the lawn is thinning or turning brown, diagnose the cause before ordering either herbicide or insecticide.

Wigmore Trading helps buyers prepare enquiries for agricultural and grounds-maintenance supplies. A good enquiry identifies the problem, the site and the intended use. Buying a chemical because a patch looks unhealthy can waste money, damage the lawn or leave the real cause untreated.

Why lawn damage does not prove you have grubs

Brown or loose turf can have several causes, including moisture problems, disease, physical damage and insects. The appearance from a distance is not enough to select a pesticide. Ask a local turf or crop adviser to inspect affected and healthy areas, rather than treating the whole property on the basis of one photograph.

Clemson Extension’s white-grub guidance describes beetle larvae and stresses treatment choices connected to their life stage. Its seasonal calendar is specific to its region. Do not automatically apply those dates to Nigeria, Ghana or another climate. Local identification, pest pressure and the approved product label should determine the next step.

What information helps an adviser?

  • When the damage first appeared and whether it is expanding.
  • The lawn species, age and maintenance history.
  • Photographs of affected patches, healthy turf and any insects found during inspection.
  • Recent irrigation, heavy rain, drought, construction or soil movement.
  • Any fertiliser, herbicide or insecticide already used, including dates and labels.
  • Whether birds or other animals are disturbing the turf.

Finding an insect in soil does not by itself prove it is causing economically significant damage. Ask the adviser how the species and infestation level were assessed, and whether monitoring is sufficient. The most useful recommendation may be improved lawn care or further diagnosis rather than an immediate chemical purchase.

Herbicide, insecticide and fertiliser do different jobs

Product category Primary purpose
Herbicide Control labelled unwanted plants
Insecticide Control labelled insect pests under specified conditions
Fertiliser Supply plant nutrients
Soil or irrigation improvements Address identified growing-condition problems

A combined product does not remove the need to identify the problem. The pest, site and application conditions must still be covered by its label. Do not assume that a general pesticide, a grass killer or a product used on crops will be approved or effective for a residential lawn.

Questions before buying a grub-control product

Ask whether the identified insect and lawn use are on the current approved label. Confirm whether the product is intended for the pest’s stage at the site, and whether it needs a particular application method or moisture condition. Ready-to-use liquid, concentrate and granular formulations require different handling and equipment.

Check access restrictions for people and animals, protective equipment, storage, spill instructions and disposal requirements. Do not assume a product is suitable for a school, hotel or family garden simply because it is available in a small pack. Site managers should agree how the treated area will be isolated according to the label.

Avoid preventable repeat spending

Keep an inspection and treatment record. Compare affected areas after the appropriate assessment period rather than adding more product because the lawn has not immediately turned green. Even successful pest control may not instantly restore damaged turf. Repair, irrigation adjustments or re-establishment can be separate parts of the maintenance budget.

For contractors and estate managers, ask the quotation to separate diagnosis, supply, application, lawn repair and follow-up. State what evidence will be used to judge whether further treatment is needed. Buying a large quantity without an identified pest and an approved site use is not a reliable cost-saving measure.

How Wigmore Trading can help with sourcing

Send the delivery city and country, site area, lawn details, inspection findings and the recommended product specification if a qualified adviser has provided one. State whether you require one-off maintenance supply, equipment or a repeat wholesale order. Ask for the proposed formulation, label, registration details, pack size, availability and delivery terms.

Wigmore Trading’s sourcing and logistics network supports enquiries across markets, but each product and destination requires confirmation. Product supply does not replace a local diagnostic inspection. If you are uncertain whether you have weeds or insects, include that uncertainty in the first message so the request is not incorrectly specified.

For visible grass weeds, read our crabgrass and foxtail guide. For low-growing broadleaf plants, use the spurge, clover and oxalis guide. Our herbicide buying guide explains why weed killers belong in a different treatment decision.

Source products with Wigmore Trading

Buying for a home, estate, farm or resale business? Our team can discuss your specification, available sourcing options and the documentation needed for your market. We support Nigerian buyers and international enquiries through our sourcing and logistics network. Availability, delivery coverage and acceptance of a particular pesticide must be confirmed for the product and destination.

Discuss your requirement with Wigmore Trading or email sales@wigmoretrading.com. Include the product or problem, quantity, delivery city and country. Request a written quote covering pack size, label, registration, lead time and delivery terms.

Technical references explain plant biology and general principles. Overseas product examples or seasonal calendars do not establish approval for use in Nigeria or another destination. Always follow the current locally approved label.
