Buying a drilling rig for Nigeria requires a verified asset and a clear plan for inspection, ownership transfer and readiness. Wigmore Trading can help organise a sourcing enquiry for new or used rigs and drilling equipment. The exact asset, seller’s authority, condition and available scope must be confirmed; this page is not a live inventory of rigs owned or offered by Wigmore.
Define the rig you intend to buy
State whether the requirement is a land rig, onshore package, offshore unit, jack-up, workover rig or drilling barge. These are different asset classes. A complete drilling rig for sale should come with an itemised package schedule, rather than a headline description that leaves major equipment out.
Provide the approved technical requirements, project location and expected duty. For used oilfield equipment, identify which condition, records and acceptance criteria are mandatory. Price alone cannot establish suitability.
New versus used equipment
A new rig proposal needs a defined manufacturer, design scope, equipment list, construction programme, inspection plan and handover state. A used rig proposal needs its identity, history, current location, maintenance and inspection records and a realistic preparation scope.
Ask which components are included, which belong to third parties and which are excluded. An asset described as “complete” may still need transport, upgrades, commissioning or supporting systems before it can be considered for the intended campaign.
Verify ownership and the right to sell
Confirm the legal seller and its authority over the actual asset. Ask for the ownership and commercial documentation appropriate to the transaction, and have competent advisers review any title, encumbrance or transfer issues. A broker’s brochure or forwarded photograph is not proof of ownership.
Verify payment instructions independently through established company contacts. Do not make an irreversible commitment simply to secure an unverified “available now” offer. Agree the inspection, acceptance and payment milestones in the written contract.
Condition, inspection and delivery
Commission the defined technical assessment before deciding the asset’s value for your project. Record defects, missing documentation, remedial work and any limitations on the assessment. Allow for further findings where dismantling or specialist testing is required.
Plan preservation, packing, dismantling, transport, import arrangements and site delivery. Delivery at a port or yard is not the same as an assembled or commissioned rig. The contract must identify the handover state and responsibility for each remaining phase.
Lease versus purchase
Consider the intended campaign, future use, availability and capacity to manage maintenance, storage, staffing and eventual resale or disposal. Compare the whole ownership requirement against a defined rental package. Neither buying nor renting is automatically the cheaper option for every project.
Send Wigmore the required rig type, technical brief, new or used preference, budget stage, location and timing. We can help structure sourcing and inspection enquiries and confirm what actual proposals can be obtained.
A practical comparison example
A used rig has a lower asking price but requires missing records to be recovered, equipment to be refurbished and modules to be transported from another country. These costs and uncertainties belong in the buying decision. A technical inspection and clear sale scope should precede the assumption that the asking price is the cost of a ready-to-work asset.
Questions before you commit
Does this page confirm equipment in stock?
No. Ask for a dated proposal naming the equipment or provider, current status, preparation needs and commercial validity. Photographs illustrate the subject and do not establish asset ownership or immediate availability.
What evidence should accompany the offer?
Use the operator-approved specification to define the required equipment records, inspection evidence, technical review and acceptance conditions. Confirm which qualified party is responsible for each specialist task.
