Shipping from the UK to Nigeria works best when the cargo, documentation and final delivery scope are agreed before collection. Wigmore Trading supports freight forwarding enquiries for commercial shipments, cargo consolidation and project movements. Share what you are shipping, where it is held and where it must be delivered so our team can assess the appropriate route and quotation.

Choose consolidation, a full container or air freight

Consolidation can suit smaller shipments that share transport space, but it adds handling and depends on the shipment’s compatibility with other goods. A full container may suit larger volumes or cargo needing a dedicated unit. Air freight can be considered for suitable urgent shipments, with the cost assessed against chargeable weight and the value of time saved.

There is no single cheapest option for every load. Packed dimensions, weight, stackability, fragility, restrictions and destination charges all affect the result. Compare the complete cost to the agreed delivery point. A low freight-only price may exclude collection, terminal handling, clearance, duties and inland transport.

Information Why it matters
Commodity and value Classification, import checks, insurance and carrier acceptance.
Packed dimensions and weight Space, chargeable weight, lifting and handling arrangements.
Collection and delivery addresses Route, access, inland costs and final unloading.
Ready date and deadline Whether a practical service can meet your required timing.
Special handling Temperature, dangerous goods, fragility, oversize or high-value controls.

For cargo consolidation in Africa, identify each supplier, package and invoice. Agree the receiving warehouse’s labelling, booking and acceptance requirements before vendors dispatch. A consolidation point should be able to reconcile what arrived against the shipment plan. Incomplete supplier information can delay the whole consignment.

UK export and Nigerian import documentation

Confirm who acts as exporter, importer and customs representative. UK export requirements can include an appropriate EORI, a customs declaration and commodity-specific licences or certificates. The commercial invoice should accurately describe the goods and value. A shipment sent as a gift or sample still needs a truthful declaration and an assessed import route.

For customs clearance in Nigeria, check the current requirements for the goods and importer before shipment, including Form M, assessment processes and relevant regulator documents where applicable. The classification and customs value must reflect the actual goods. Do not rely on under-declaration or a vague invoice to reduce charges.

Some machinery, chemicals, medical products, food and batteries need additional checks. A product’s regulatory route should be resolved while it is still at origin. Shipping first and investigating permissions after arrival can create storage costs and may prevent release. Wigmore can discuss the documentation work within the quoted service scope.

Project cargo and mining logistics in Africa

For oversized or heavy machinery, supply packing drawings, centre of gravity where relevant, lifting points and weights. An engineer or competent lifting specialist should confirm the handling plan. Route constraints, bridge limits, site access, cranes and unloading space can determine the equipment and schedule needed for final delivery.

Mining logistics may involve a remote site with limited lifting or storage capacity. Align dispatch with foundations, power, security and installation readiness. Agree responsibility for dismantling, preservation, lashing, transport surveys and reassembly. A port-to-port booking does not automatically cover a difficult final road leg.

Cold chain logistics need product-specific controls

Give the required temperature range, allowable journey time, packaging and handling instructions. Identify how the shipment will be monitored and who is authorised to assess an excursion. Refrigerated transport alone does not establish that a product remained within its requirements at every handover.

For food, pharmaceuticals or other sensitive cargo, confirm the relevant permits and the receiving facility’s readiness. Ask about transfer points, storage, contingency arrangements and how monitoring records are supplied. The logistics solution must be suitable for the actual product and route, with responsibilities agreed before acceptance.

Understand transit times, insurance and exclusions

Request a schedule showing collection, cut-off, departure, transit and clearance assumptions. An estimate is not a guaranteed delivery appointment unless specifically contracted. Weather, carrier changes, inspections, missing documents and port congestion can affect movement. Build appropriate contingency into production or installation plans.

Ask about cargo insurance separately from carrier liability. Confirm declared value, insured risks, excesses, exclusions and claims evidence. Photograph packaging and record condition at handover and arrival. Timely notification matters if a loss or damage claim arises.
