A grain dryer should be selected for the crop arriving at the site and the condition required at dispatch or storage. A capacity figure without intake and target conditions can be misleading, especially when comparing a solar dryer with a mechanical drying system.
Wigmore Trading supports sourcing enquiries for grain drying machines, solar crop dryers and agricultural drying systems in Nigeria and Africa. Share your approved process requirements so equipment, utilities and logistics can be assessed.
Define the crop and required outcome
Identify maize, paddy rice, seed or another crop, expected intake condition and intended use. Seed drying, milling preparation and general commodity storage can require different quality controls. The responsible specialist should establish appropriate limits and processing conditions.
Record harvest volumes and the time available to process them. The dryer must fit the receiving schedule, labour and downstream storage rather than simply match the annual tonnage on a business plan.
Compare technologies on a consistent basis
| Option | Questions for evaluation |
|---|---|
| Solar drying | Weather dependence, airflow, protection and practical batch cycle |
| Mechanical batch drying | Batch size, energy, cycle assumptions and quality control |
| Continuous drying | Intake rate, utilities, handling and stable operation |
| Hybrid arrangement | Interfaces, backup energy and operating responsibilities |
Ask suppliers to state the assumptions behind throughput. Compare the same crop and moisture-removal task. A quoted number of tonnes per hour is not a universal rating for all crops and weather.
Include preparation and handling
Assess whether cleaning, conveyors, elevators, receiving hoppers and temporary storage are needed. Grain must move through the facility at a manageable rate without creating a bottleneck before or after the dryer.
Ask a qualified engineering team to establish electrical or fuel requirements, ventilation, dust control, fire precautions and safe maintenance access. A dryer quotation should identify what is supplied and what the site must provide.
Protect quality and verify the result
Define how moisture and quality will be checked using appropriate methods and equipment. Set acceptance criteria with your crop or process specialist, including sampling and records. Avoid promises that a dryer will eliminate all post-harvest losses.
FAO storage guidance explains why grain condition and the storage environment matter. Drying and storage should form a coordinated process, rather than treating the dryer as a stand-alone solution.
Plan installation and operating cost
Include foundations, unloading, utilities, commissioning, training, wear parts and service access. Compare energy and labour under realistic operating assumptions. For solar systems, ask how seasonal weather affects capacity and whether a contingency is necessary.
Agree a demonstration or acceptance test appropriate to representative crop and conditions. The contract should explain what performance is being assessed and who approves the result.
Is solar drying always the cheapest option?
Assess the full cost, weather exposure, throughput and quality requirements. The appropriate option depends on the project.
How do I request a quotation?
Send crop details, measured intake conditions, required output, peak volume, location, available energy and installation scope. Wigmore can assess equipment sourcing against that brief.
Prepare your enquiry
Note what you need, the location, quantities or project size, intended dates and the support required. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions. Start with a non-confidential brief; the team can explain what further information is appropriate.
This checklist is for your preparation and does not submit a form.
