Grain handling equipment connects intake, cleaning, drying, storage and dispatch. A strong machine in one part of the route cannot compensate for a narrow transfer point elsewhere. Procurement should therefore assess the whole flow of material.

Wigmore Trading welcomes sourcing enquiries for agricultural loading, unloading and grain-handling systems in Nigeria and African markets. Provide the crop, required capacity, layout and existing equipment so a suitable supply scope can be assessed.

Map the material route

Identify the receiving vehicles, discharge arrangements, storage locations and final loading point. Show distances, heights and access constraints. Explain whether the facility handles bagged produce, bulk grain or both.

State expected peak intake and dispatch rather than only an annual volume. Determine whether several operations happen simultaneously. A cooperative receiving during harvest may need a different layout from a mill drawing steadily from storage.

Select equipment for the actual task

Equipment family Specification questions
Conveyors Material, distance, inclination, capacity and transfer interfaces
Elevators Lift height, crop condition, throughput and maintenance access
Receiving and loading Vehicle types, hopper arrangement, weighing and dust management
Controls Sequence, interlocks, alarms and integration responsibility

The technical team should assess crop damage and suitability for the intended commodity. Equipment appropriate for a general bulk material is not automatically appropriate for seed or food grain.

Check every interface

Match transfer rates, inlet and outlet arrangements and the control sequence. If several vendors supply components, appoint a clearly responsible integration party. Record who supplies supports, platforms, electrical installation and commissioning.

Provide accurate information about existing machinery. A photograph may help an initial enquiry, but final design should use appropriate drawings, measurements and engineering review.

Plan safety and hygiene through competent design

Grain movement can involve machinery, combustible dust, work at height and confined spaces. Qualified specialists should establish guarding, fire precautions, extraction, isolation and access arrangements. Procurement should request the approved design and documentation rather than improvise operating procedures.

Food-contact suitability, cleanability and contamination control should be reviewed for the actual application. Include arrangements for clearing residual material and keeping different grades or lots separate.

Compare complete delivered systems

Include site works, transport, unloading, installation, controls, testing and operator training. Request wear-part information and maintenance access requirements. A factory quotation for a conveyor does not establish the installed price of a complete handling line.

Agree acceptance criteria using the stated crop and operating assumptions. Record as-built information and spare-parts references at handover so future maintenance is not dependent on an incomplete sales brochure.

Can I add one conveyor to my existing silo?

Possibly, subject to a proper review of capacity, physical interfaces, structural support and controls.

What should I send Wigmore?

Provide crop, bulk or bagged format, throughput, route layout, lift heights, destination and available utilities. We can assess sourcing and identify the specialist information required for a detailed proposal.

Prepare your enquiry

Note what you need, the location, quantities or project size, intended dates and the support required. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions. Start with a non-confidential brief; the team can explain what further information is appropriate.

This checklist is for your preparation and does not submit a form.
