Sourcing from Japan works best when the enquiry identifies the product, intended application and destination. Wigmore Trading can assess supplier-search and logistics requirements for a defined commercial brief. A supplier’s location does not by itself establish Japanese manufacture, an authorised brand relationship or available stock.

Furniture, Appliances and Consumer Goods: start with the application
Build a stock list with models, variants, quantities and target customer. Furniture needs dimensions, materials, finish and assembly information. Appliances need destination-compatible power, capacity and service arrangements. Sports goods, toys, games, bags and stationery should be specified by their actual use, age group where relevant and retail presentation.
Approve a sample and the packaging
Confirm that the sample reflects the planned commercial product. Record carton size, units per carton, protective packing, labels and assembly parts. For appliances, check available spares and warranty support in the destination market. For toys and sports products, establish the safety evidence required for the intended customer and use; a supplier statement alone may not answer the importer’s requirements.
Separate artworks from ordinary retail inventory
For paintings, sculptures and collectible photographic materials, request provenance, ownership evidence, condition reports and a packing plan appropriate to the object. Do not assume art can travel under the same documentation as household supplies. Compare the landed cost per saleable unit, including fragile handling, storage, final delivery and likely damage or returns.
Cotton, Textiles, Apparel and Technical Fabrics: start with the application
Specify fibre composition, construction, weight, width, finish and intended use. Cotton lint, yarn, non-wovens, technical fabrics, carpets and finished garments are distinct buying categories. Garment orders need size charts, colourways, labelling and quantities by variant; technical fabrics need the functional properties required by the application.
Approve measurable quality criteria
Agree sample standards, tolerances, colour references and the inspection method before production or purchase. For yarn and cotton, define the properties your mill needs rather than relying on a general trade description. For coated and rubberised fabrics, establish coating performance, compatibility and durability requirements. For leather and hides, specify species, tanning, grade and traceability.
Keep used goods and retail-ready goods separate
Used clothing requires condition, sorting and destination eligibility checks before an offer is accepted. Do not assume a route used for new apparel accepts used textiles. Confirm bale or carton weights, moisture protection, handling and damage procedures. Compare usable yield and accepted quality, not only price per kilogram or per piece.
Wood, Paper and Packaging Materials: start with the application
Record the material, grade, dimensions, moisture requirements and intended conversion process. Sawn wood, logs, carpentry products, pulp, paper and completed packaging have different acceptance criteria. For paper, specify grammage, coating, width, roll or sheet format and print requirements. Packaging orders need drawings, closure details and load expectations.
Specify the performance the material must deliver
For cartons and containers, agree stacking, protection and handling requirements for the actual contents. For labels and brochures, confirm artwork, substrate, finish, quantities and proof approval. Recovered paper needs a defined grade, contamination limits and usable yield. Pulp and cellulose orders should identify the process and analytical properties that matter to the receiving mill.
Protect the cargo and verify the route
For timber, establish species, origin, legal sourcing evidence and the destination plant-health requirements for the exact form. Discuss moisture protection and ventilation with the shipper. Identify whether recycled materials are classified as products or waste before shipment. Include pallet, roll and bundle weights and the unloading method in the freight enquiry.
Packaged Foods, Beverages and Vegetable Oils: start with the application
Specify product type, ingredients, retail or bulk format, quantity and destination market. Prepared cereals, sauces, confectionery, baked goods, juices, coffee and oils serve different distribution channels. Identify whether the requirement is for branded resale, private-label production or an industrial ingredient so suppliers quote on the right basis.
Check labels and shelf life before a commercial order
Obtain ingredient and allergen details, pack artwork, lot identification, storage requirements and remaining shelf life. Approve a representative sample and confirm the destination rules for registration and labelling. For oils and ingredients, agree the relevant analytical specification and test evidence. For alcoholic beverages, identify licensed trading and import arrangements before discussing availability.
Compare the delivered saleable unit
Record units per case, pallet configuration, dimensions, weights and handling needs. Allow for heat exposure, breakage, expiry and storage alongside the invoice price. A cheaper pack can be uneconomic if the importer cannot sell it before expiry. Ask suppliers to identify actual origin and manufacturing location; dispatch from the United States does not prove US manufacture.
Agree the quality and logistics scope
Ask suppliers to quote the same grade, model, quantity, condition and delivery basis. Define the evidence and sample approval needed before purchase. Record packing, weights, dimensions, handling requirements, proposed collection date and the party responsible for each stage of delivery.
Include inspection, export preparation, freight, insurance, destination charges, duties, storage and final delivery in the comparison. Have the responsible exporter and importer establish the product’s acceptance pathway. For the Japanese official export-control starting point, consult METI’s export-control information; the exact product, recipient and use need their own assessment.
Send a specification-led enquiry
Provide the product or catalogue reference, quantity, intended use, destination and required arrival date. Say whether you need a replacement, production input or wholesale resale stock. Ask Wigmore Trading to clarify the sourcing and logistics scope that can be assessed for your brief.
Return to the Japan product sourcing directory for machinery, vehicles, electronics and regulated procurement. Compare the United States directory if you are evaluating an alternative source market.
Discuss your requirement with Wigmore Trading
Send the product or cargo specification, quantity, destination and required date. Tell us whether you need supplier search, procurement coordination, inspection coordination, consolidation or freight. Availability, scope, responsibilities and prices are confirmed for the actual enquiry.
