LNG Vessel Conversion and Terminal Equipment in Nigeria: Procurement Guide

Converting a vessel to LNG or sourcing LNG terminal equipment is an engineering project with procurement inside it. Before requesting prices, establish the vessel or facility duty, design responsibility and approval route. Conversion feasibility comes first

For a dual-fuel conversion, provide the vessel’s technical particulars, operating profile and available drawings to a qualified naval architect and relevant equipment specialists. Assess space, weight, range, fuel access, downtime and commercial viability before treating a retrofit as a purchase list.

Ask the flag and class parties what approvals and surveys apply. DNV’s published process provides for documentation approval on vessel alteration projects; references to DNV or Lloyd’s Register in an enquiry do not imply that Wigmore or a proposed design has class approval.

Define the system interfaces

Fuel storage, supply to consumers, controls, safety systems and ship integration need coordinated engineering. The IMO IGF Code is a key safety reference for relevant gas-fuelled ships, but the appointed professionals must determine its application and other requirements for the particular vessel.

Assign one accountable integration lead. Do not assume that separately supplied tanks, engines and controls will work together simply because each is advertised for LNG service.

Terminal and port equipment

For cryogenic loading arms, transfer equipment and terminal packages, specify fluid, duty, design conditions, site interface and required certification. Ask for material and testing documentation appropriate to the service. Supplier selection should follow engineering requirements rather than headline price.

Boil-off gas management must be assessed in the complete system context. Ask the designer to explain normal operation, different load conditions and the approved protective arrangements. This page does not provide operating or design instructions.

Supplier and yard qualification

Verify relevant project references, technical personnel, quality records and the ability to support installation and commissioning. Identify which work is performed by the OEM, shipyard, integrator and subcontractors. Confirm the warranty boundary and responsibility for interface problems.

For replacement or used equipment, investigate identity, history, condition, documentation and whether the proposed application can be accepted. A lower purchase price does not offset an unusable or unapprovable package.

Budget the complete project

Include feasibility, design, approvals, equipment, shipping, yard work, commissioning, training, downtime and contingency. Assess the available fuel supply route as part of the investment case. A conversion can be technically possible while commercially unattractive for the actual vessel route.

Yes. Include the engineering specification and interfaces so the proposed item can be reviewed for the actual service.

No. The relevant approval, survey and documentation scope must be defined and contracted with the appropriate parties.
