Rig refurbishment in Nigeria should begin with the asset’s condition and its next intended duty. Refurbishment, rehabilitation, reactivation and life extension are related procurement topics, but they are not the same deliverable. Wigmore Trading can help organise the equipment, specialist-service and logistics enquiry around an agreed assessment and work scope.

Warm-stacked and cold-stacked reactivation

A stacked rig needs a documented review of its preservation history, current state and requirements for the proposed campaign. “Warm-stacked” and “cold-stacked” labels do not prove readiness or establish a fixed reactivation period. Request the actual maintenance, storage and inspection records and identify gaps before estimating cost or schedule.

The operator, owner and competent specialists should establish what must be inspected, repaired, replaced or tested. Equipment that has been idle can require attention even when its last operating record was satisfactory. A return-to-service plan needs evidence for the named asset.

Refurbishment, overhaul and structural work

Separate cosmetic work from mechanical overhaul, structural refurbishment and system upgrades. Derrick refurbishment and other structural changes need appropriate engineering review. Ask for a defect register, approved repair scope, material and inspection records and a defined close-out process.

Rig equipment refurbishment should specify the item, manufacturer, model, history and intended duty. A general promise to overhaul the rig can hide exclusions for major components or third-party systems. Identify what is retained, replaced and supplied by others.

Modernisation, retrofit and conversion

Rig automation, control changes, power upgrades and equipment replacements can affect interfaces across the package. Land rig, offshore rig, jack-up, drillship and workover rig upgrades require configuration-specific review. The engineering authority should evaluate the impact and control revised documentation.

A rig conversion is not simply a refurbishment with a new label. Define the proposed new duty and the assessment, design and acceptance work needed. Do not assume that previous ratings, certificates or permissions remain applicable after modifications.

Life extension and recommissioning

Life extension requires an evidence-based assessment and the approvals applicable to the asset. It should not be promised solely on age, paint condition or replacement of selected parts. Confirm the competent provider and the requirements that its assessment will address.

Recommissioning is a defined technical phase. Agree its scope, responsible parties, test records and acceptance conditions separately from workshop completion or transport. Any recertification needs a named issuer and a clear basis; it is not an automatic result of refurbishment.

Budget and programme

Divide the proposal into assessment, confirmed remedial work, provisional findings, long-lead parts, testing, logistics and acceptance. Use hold points before uncertain work creates additional commitments. Ask how discoveries during dismantling affect price and schedule.

Send Wigmore the rig identity, current location, stacking and maintenance history, intended campaign and required date. We can help structure a sourcing and project-support enquiry, subject to confirmation of the actual specialist scope and readiness evidence.

A practical comparison example

A cold-stacked rig is proposed for a future campaign, but its preservation records are incomplete. The buyer should request a condition-assessment scope and a staged reactivation budget before treating the asset as ready. Parts availability and specialist review may determine the programme. Comparing this with a ready unit requires the full preparation and mobilisation cost, not just the advertised rig rate.

Questions before you commit

Does this page confirm equipment in stock?

No. Ask for a dated proposal naming the equipment or provider, current status, preparation needs and commercial validity. Photographs illustrate the subject and do not establish asset ownership or immediate availability.

What evidence should accompany the offer?

Use the operator-approved specification to define the required equipment records, inspection evidence, technical review and acceptance conditions. Confirm which qualified party is responsible for each specialist task.
