A drilling rig construction enquiry in Nigeria should describe a complete project, not simply request a price for steelwork. Design responsibility, equipment integration, fabrication quality, testing and final acceptance all affect whether the finished package can meet its intended duty. Wigmore Trading can help scope sourcing and procurement enquiries for rig packages and fabrication requirements, with the actual manufacturer, engineering authority and construction contractor identified for the project.

We do not imply that Wigmore operates a rig manufacturing yard or holds every design, fabrication or certification capability in-house. Tell us what is needed so the available scope and proposed specialist parties can be confirmed.

Newbuild rig, custom package or fabricated structure?

A new drilling rig project may involve a complete package, selected major systems or a fabricated structure integrated with equipment from several suppliers. These are different contracts. Establish whether your requirement is a newbuild, an upgrade, a replacement component or an entirely custom-built configuration.

“Turnkey rig construction” should have a defined handover state. Does it mean factory-assembled equipment, delivered modules, installation support or a commissioned package accepted for the intended project? Do not assume that the word includes transport, site works, operating crew or regulatory permissions.

Build a procurement scope that can be quoted

  • Intended application, terrain or offshore setting and operator requirements.
  • Design basis, required capacities and interfaces approved by your engineering authority.
  • Package boundary: structures, mechanical systems, power, controls and supporting equipment.
  • Applicable design and quality requirements, with responsibility for confirming them.
  • Inspection, testing, documentation and acceptance milestones.
  • Manufacturing location, delivery route, assembly scope and target programme.

Separate mandatory requirements from preferences. Ask potential suppliers to identify deviations and exclusions against the same enquiry schedule. A complete drilling rig package must be evaluated as an integrated system, not just a list of attractive component prices.

Check the proposed manufacturer and fabrication contractor

Request relevant completed-project evidence, actual manufacturing facilities, named engineering responsibility and the quality system applicable to the work. Verify which activities will be subcontracted and who controls those interfaces. Brand logos or a general trading history do not establish competence to design and build a rig.

For an oilfield fabrication contractor, the contract should identify the drawings, material and welding requirements, inspection arrangements and release authority. These are matters for qualified specialists to define and verify. A sourcing intermediary should not substitute informal assurances for the required technical evidence.

Quality records and progress milestones

Agree the inspection and test plan before work starts. Define the records required for materials, manufacturing, inspections, tests and equipment supplied by third parties. Link payments to verifiable milestones and accepted deliverables rather than an unqualified calendar promise.

Change control is essential for custom rig fabrication. A change to one package can affect structure, power, controls, transport or maintenance access. Require the design authority to review the effect and update the controlled documents before a change is accepted.

Compare whole-project cost and programme

Separate engineering, purchased equipment, fabrication, inspection, testing, packing, transport, duties and site work. Ask which costs are provisional and what assumptions drive the schedule. Imported components, specialist approvals and rework can affect completion dates.

A delivery-ready structure is not automatically an operational drilling rig. Record the final handover requirements, manuals, spare-parts schedule, warranty boundaries, training and technical support where included. Confirm the permissions needed for the intended operating phase separately.

Start a rig construction enquiry with Wigmore

Send the intended application, project region, technical scope, budget stage and programme. State whether design is complete or you need a design-and-build proposal. Wigmore can help organise the procurement brief and related equipment or logistics enquiries, subject to confirmation of specialist capabilities and the agreed contract scope.

Before requesting a firm quotation

Can an online guide confirm a rate or available asset?

No. A meaningful offer needs a defined scope, named provider or asset, current availability and commercial validity. Ask for the assumptions, exclusions and acceptance conditions in writing.

What can Wigmore help organise?

Send the procurement gap, location, programme window and approved technical brief. The team can scope sourcing, equipment and logistics requirements and confirm which specialist services can be included. Technical authority and operating responsibilities must be agreed with the named qualified parties.

For examples of OEM structure categories, see NOV drilling structures. Reference information is not an approved design or evidence of a Wigmore manufacturer appointment.

Skids, modules and terrain-specific rig construction

Rig skid fabrication and module fabrication should follow a controlled design and interface schedule. State the equipment carried by each assembly, the approved transport and lifting interfaces, connection points and required documentation. A modular drilling rig is an integrated package; dividing it into smaller modules does not remove the need for system-level engineering.

Mobile and land rig construction must account for the intended movement and assembly concept. Onshore, offshore, jack-up, drilling-barge and workover configurations have different structural and operating interfaces. Do not treat a fabricator’s experience with one configuration as proof of competence for every rig type.

Define what is supplied with each module

Ask whether a rig skid or module offer covers bare steelwork, installed equipment, piping, electrical work, instrumentation, controls, preservation and testing. Use an inclusion schedule and identify who integrates the modules into the complete package. Record dimensions and weights as controlled engineering outputs rather than informal shipping estimates.

For workover rig fabrication or a drilling barge construction project, establish the proposed design authority, manufacturer and specialist contractors. The enquiry should separate platform or barge construction from drilling equipment and operational services. Each requires appropriate competence and project-specific review.

What should a custom fabrication quote contain?

Request the design basis and revision, deliverable list, inspection and test plan, material and manufacturing records, deviations, commercial milestones and handover state. Confirm the proposed supplier’s actual capability and the rights to use any third-party design. Wigmore can help organise this procurement brief and related sourcing; no in-house rig manufacturing or automatic certification is implied.

Plan fabrication alongside readiness

For an existing asset, compare a rig refurbishment and reactivation scope with new construction. Use a defined rig inspection and condition assessment to establish the evidence needed before acceptance. Final movement and assembly responsibilities belong in the rig mobilisation and logistics plan.
