Searching for a drilling contractor in Nigeria can mean very different things: hiring a rig, securing a complete rig-and-crew package, or engaging a contractor to deliver an integrated well programme. Defining the responsibility you need is the first step towards a useful quotation. Wigmore Trading can help organise sourcing and procurement enquiries, while the proposed operating contractor and specialist services must be identified and verified for the project.

Choose the contracting scope before comparing prices

Scope Questions to resolve
Drilling equipment hire Who operates, maintains, inspects and insures the equipment?
Rig and crew Which personnel and supporting systems are included, and who manages the well programme?
Managed rig operations Who controls maintenance, performance reporting, competency checks and interfaces?
Integrated drilling services Which specialist packages are combined and who remains accountable for each interface?
Turnkey proposal What is the defined deliverable, what assumptions apply and how are changes handled?

These are descriptions for comparing offers, not universal contract definitions. The written agreement determines what is actually included. Avoid assuming that a single headline price covers all technical, regulatory and logistics work.

What to ask a rig contractor

Request the legal contracting entity, evidence of authority to offer the named rig, current service permissions, relevant project experience, technical dossier and a proposed organisation chart. Experience should relate to the terrain and well requirements you are planning. A general company brochure is not a substitute for evidence about the crew and equipment offered to your campaign.

Ask who will supply specialist services such as directional work, drilling fluids, cementing, logging or testing where required by the programme. Each package needs a defined scope, interface and acceptance process. Competent operator and contractor teams should determine the technical requirements; a sourcing agent should not substitute a generic package for an approved well plan.

Rig operations management and reporting

A managed drilling services proposal should explain the reporting structure, operational authority, maintenance responsibility, change-control process and agreed performance measures. Separate a measure of drilling performance from a contractual guarantee of a well result. Geological uncertainty and programme changes cannot be resolved by marketing language.

Ask how equipment defects, delayed third-party services and unplanned downtime will be recorded and attributed. The contract should specify evidence and escalation, not leave the parties to dispute responsibility after an interruption. Agree who approves substitutions of key personnel or equipment.

Verify permissions for the actual work

NUPRC’s OGISP system provides a route for checking service permits, and its published guidance distinguishes service categories. The operating entity’s permission must match the work proposed. Rig licensing and well-specific approvals are additional matters for the operator and competent advisers to confirm. Do not treat an equipment quotation or a permit in an unrelated category as authority to conduct a drilling campaign.

Check validity, scope and issuing authority directly. Request any project-specific insurance, competency and safety documentation required by the operator. Avoid publishing or exchanging sensitive project data unnecessarily; release detailed technical material through an agreed, controlled procurement process.

Compare contractor proposals fairly

Issue the same scope and assumptions to each candidate. Ask for a clear inclusion and exclusion schedule covering crew, fuel, spares, transport, accommodation, maintenance, inspections and third-party services. Identify day rates, mobilisation, standby, minimum commitments, variation rules and payment milestones separately.

A low equipment rate can become expensive if critical support is excluded or if the proposed rig needs substantial preparation. Score proposals for technical fit and credible readiness as well as commercial terms. Any final selection should pass the operator’s technical, commercial and compliance reviews.

How Wigmore can assist

Tell Wigmore whether you need a rig sourcing enquiry, an equipment package, logistics support or help defining the contractor procurement brief. We can scope that enquiry and identify the information needed for a meaningful response. We do not imply that a sourcing request appoints Wigmore as the licensed drilling operator or guarantees an integrated service package.

Send the project country and region, terrain, campaign window, anticipated duration, well programme summary and the required division of responsibilities. If you already have an operator-approved scope, include a version reference and list the remaining procurement gaps.

Before you approve the proposal

Can I get an immediate price?

A budget indication may be possible once the requirements are understood. A firm proposal needs the named asset, confirmed availability, scope and assumptions. There is no reliable universal Nigerian rig rental price that applies to every campaign.

Does an enquiry reserve a rig?

No. Ask for written confirmation of the reservation process, technical acceptance conditions and commercial milestones. Do not schedule dependent project work on an unconfirmed marketing availability statement.

For regulatory checks, use NUPRC’s official service-permit portal and its Wells and Drilling Services information. Confirm the requirements applicable to the actual project and contracting entity.

Exploration, appraisal and development well contracting

Define the well objective in the enquiry. Exploration, appraisal and development drilling are different campaign contexts; a production-well programme also needs its own approved technical brief. An oil well drilling contractor or gas well drilling contractor should respond to that programme rather than offer a generic depth-based package.

Specify whether the work concerns a new well, a completion campaign or an intervention on an existing well. “Deep well drilling” can also refer to water-well projects in general searches, so identify the application clearly. Equipment and service qualifications are not interchangeable between sectors.

Directional, horizontal and complex wells

Directional well drilling, horizontal drilling, high-angle wells, extended-reach drilling and multilateral wells require a programme-specific selection of equipment and specialist services. Ask the operator’s engineering team to define the required deliverables and interfaces, then compare the proposed contractor’s relevant experience and equipment evidence.

A complex well or HPHT description is not a complete specification. The technical review should establish the applicable pressure, temperature and performance requirements and the evidence needed from each supplier. This guide is a procurement framework, not an operating procedure or a basis for designing a well.

Can drilling and completion be quoted together?

Yes, an enquiry can ask for a combined proposal, but it needs a separate scope for each phase. Identify the completion programme, specialist packages, acceptance criteria and responsibility for interfaces. Do not assume a drilling rig rate includes completion equipment, well intervention or later production services.
