Onshore drilling rig leasing in Nigeria starts with matching an approved well programme to the site and a complete rig package. A powerful rig that cannot reach the pad, or a mobile unit that does not meet the technical requirement, is not a workable solution. Wigmore Trading can scope land rig sourcing enquiries around the information your operator and engineering team provide.
This guide covers commercial procurement for onshore oil and gas drilling. Water-well, geotechnical and mineral exploration rigs may require very different packages. Identify the application before requesting a land rig for lease or a truck-mounted drilling rig.
Define the well and campaign first
State whether the campaign concerns exploration, appraisal, development or another approved well operation. Provide the planned well profile and technical requirements through an agreed project channel. The competent operator team should define the capacities and equipment needed; a “deep drilling” or “high-horsepower” description is not a complete specification.
Include the number of wells, expected campaign duration, spacing between locations, mobilisation window and support facilities. If the programme changes, ask the proposer to reassess the package rather than assuming that the original offer still applies.
Compare land rig configurations
| Search description | Procurement question |
|---|---|
| Light, medium or heavy land rig | What verified capacities does this specific unit provide for the intended task? |
| Truck-mounted or mobile rig | Are road access, axle loads, turning space and rig-up area compatible? |
| Skid-mounted or modular rig | How many transport loads, lifts and assembly interfaces are required? |
| Fast-moving rig | What is the realistic move sequence between your actual sites? |
| High-horsepower or deep-drilling rig | Does the full system meet the operator-approved well requirements? |
These labels do not establish a universal rating or a guarantee of drilling performance. Request the named rig’s dossier and an engineering review against the programme. Evaluate supporting systems, condition and inspection records alongside the principal rating.
HPHT and demanding locations require a specific review
High-pressure, high-temperature drilling cannot be selected from a general rental list. The operator and specialist contractors must establish the applicable design, equipment and competency requirements. Ask for evidence that the proposed package meets those requirements, with deviations identified for formal review.
The same applies to remote or desert-location enquiries. Heat, access, communications, water, fuel, accommodation, maintenance and emergency arrangements affect feasibility. A rig described as suitable for a harsh environment still requires a site-specific assessment.
Access and mobilisation can decide the schedule
For each location, provide the route, pad information, bridge and road constraints, available lifting support and delivery sequence. Competent transport and site teams should validate the move. Do not assume that the shortest map route can carry the rig’s heaviest component.
Ask which party prepares the pad, improves access, secures movement permissions and arranges unloading. Distinguish arrival at a yard from delivery to the well site and from acceptance as ready for operations. Each milestone can have a different cost and billing consequence.
Request a complete onshore rig quotation
Separate mobilisation, demobilisation, day rate, standby, minimum hire and any preparation work. Confirm whether crew, maintenance, inspection, spare parts, fuel and specialist services are included. If the unit is being reactivated, ask for the preparation scope and evidence needed before acceptance.
A useful comparison records the assumptions behind every offer. A lower daily rate may not be the lower campaign cost if transport is complex or essential services are excluded. Ensure the legal contractor, rig identity, current status and permissions are checked before award.
How to enquire with Wigmore
Send the application, state and site region, campaign dates, anticipated duration, operator-approved technical brief and mobilisation constraints. Tell us whether you want an equipment sourcing enquiry or a broader rig-and-services proposal. Wigmore can help organise the procurement requirements and logistics discussion, with actual availability and operating scope confirmed by the proposed parties.
Before you approve the proposal
Can I get an immediate price?
A budget indication may be possible once the requirements are understood. A firm proposal needs the named asset, confirmed availability, scope and assumptions. There is no reliable universal Nigerian rig rental price that applies to every campaign.
Does an enquiry reserve a rig?
No. Ask for written confirmation of the reservation process, technical acceptance conditions and commercial milestones. Do not schedule dependent project work on an unconfirmed marketing availability statement.
