Rig engineering in Nigeria needs a clear design authority and an integrated scope. A mast, derrick, substructure or drill floor cannot be selected safely from a general fabrication description alone. Wigmore Trading can help organise procurement enquiries for equipment and specialist engineering or fabrication requirements, with actual capabilities and responsibilities confirmed for the project.

This is a buyer’s guide to preparing an enquiry. It is not a structural design, fabrication specification or substitute for qualified engineering review.

Define the engineering disciplines and interfaces

Discipline What the procurement brief should identify
Structural Approved design basis, loads, interfaces, materials and acceptance requirements
Mechanical Equipment functions, integration, access and maintenance requirements
Electrical Power requirements, interfaces and applicable installation criteria
Instrumentation and controls Measurement, control interfaces, documentation and verification scope
Automation Required functions, integration responsibility and acceptance testing

Each discipline should work from compatible controlled information. A change in equipment configuration can affect the structure, power supply and controls. Name the party responsible for resolving those interfaces and approving changes.

Mast and derrick fabrication

A drilling mast or derrick enquiry needs the approved design and duty requirements, not simply a requested height. Ask for the relevant capacities, interfaces and configuration to be established by the engineering authority. Existing drawings also need a controlled revision and confirmation that they apply to the required unit.

OEM reference material illustrates that drilling structures come in different configurations. It should help frame questions, not be copied as an approved design for another rig. Do not assume a fabricator can reproduce a branded design or use proprietary drawings without the necessary rights and approvals.

Substructures and drill-floor packages

Rig substructure construction and drill floor fabrication must be assessed in relation to the complete package. Equipment layout, structural interfaces, access and the intended operating arrangement need coordinated design. Ask what is included in the fabricated assembly and what must be supplied or installed by others.

For replacements or modifications, provide the existing asset identity and available records. Missing documentation should be identified early. Do not assume an altered structure retains its previous rating or approval without the required assessment.

Engineering evidence before fabrication release

Agree the design deliverables, review and approval process, inspection and test plan and final documentation schedule. Qualified specialists should establish the applicable engineering and fabrication requirements. Request material traceability, relevant inspection records and the evidence needed for release and acceptance.

The commercial contract should distinguish design review from approval, fabrication completion from delivery, and delivery from installation or commissioning. Each milestone requires a defined responsible party and objective evidence.

Controls and automation are part of the package

A rig control-system engineering enquiry should specify the required functions and interfaces, documentation, testing and support needs. Automation is not a generic upgrade that can be promised independently of the installed equipment. Ask for compatibility and acceptance criteria to be reviewed for the actual configuration.

Confirm access to manuals, configuration records, spares and vendor support where required. Identify who is responsible for integration, verification, operator training and future changes. A control cabinet supply quote alone is not a complete engineering or commissioning service.

How to request a proposal

Send Wigmore the rig or component identity, newbuild or modification scope, available design documents, required deliverables and project programme. State which engineering disciplines and fabrication packages need assistance. We can help structure the procurement enquiry, with the named engineering provider, fabricator and available scope confirmed before work is commissioned.

Before requesting a firm quotation

Can an online guide confirm a rate or available asset?

No. A meaningful offer needs a defined scope, named provider or asset, current availability and commercial validity. Ask for the assumptions, exclusions and acceptance conditions in writing.

What can Wigmore help organise?

Send the procurement gap, location, programme window and approved technical brief. The team can scope sourcing, equipment and logistics requirements and confirm which specialist services can be included. Technical authority and operating responsibilities must be agreed with the named qualified parties.
