Drillship leasing in Nigeria begins with the offshore well programme and the capability of a named vessel. Buyers searching for drillship rental, a deepwater drillship or a drillship contractor need a technical and commercial package that fits the campaign. Wigmore Trading can help organise the sourcing enquiry and supporting procurement requirements, with actual availability and operating scope confirmed by the proposed parties.

A drillship is a ship-shaped drilling unit. It should not be confused with a supply vessel, an intervention vessel or a jack-up rig. “Ultra-deepwater” describes a capability category that must be checked against the specific vessel’s documented ratings and the operator’s programme.

What belongs in a drillship enquiry?

  • Project country and region, water-depth information and environmental criteria available for review.
  • Operator-approved well programme summary and the drilling and subsea interfaces required.
  • Proposed start window, expected duration, options and schedule flexibility.
  • Required station-keeping capability, class and supporting assurance documents.
  • Shore-base, marine supply, personnel transport and other logistics requirements.
  • Whether you seek a rig-and-crew package, a defined drilling service or preliminary market screening.

State which information is preliminary. A supplier should identify gaps and assumptions rather than turn an incomplete request into an apparently firm offer. Share sensitive programme data through an agreed procurement channel.

Dynamic positioning: what DP2 and DP3 mean for buyers

Dynamic positioning uses a combination of power, thrusters and controls to maintain the vessel’s position and heading. DP equipment classes address different failure and redundancy criteria. In broad terms, class 2 addresses specified single failures, while class 3 adds separation-related criteria involving fire or flooding. The applicable guidance, vessel documentation and class notation need specialist review.

A search for a “DP2 drillship” or “DP3 drillship” must therefore become a documented project requirement. A DP class is not a water-depth rating and does not, by itself, prove suitability for a particular well. Ask the operator’s competent marine team to specify the required notation, assurance evidence and activity-specific limitations.

The IMO guidelines cover equipment classes, testing, documentation and operating considerations. Procurement should request the relevant current evidence for the named unit, rather than accept a marketing abbreviation as a complete station-keeping assurance.

Availability and mobilisation in Nigeria or West Africa

Request the drillship’s identity, current location, owner-supported contract status and credible release window. Ask about inspections, maintenance, modifications or reactivation needed before the campaign. A fleet list is not proof that a ship is available for hire.

Mobilisation must account for the starting location and project-specific readiness. Agree who manages marine movement, port and shore-base interfaces, customs and applicable permissions. A drillship elsewhere in West Africa is not automatically ready or authorised to work in Nigeria.

Compare the drillship day rate with the contract total

There is no single reliable Nigeria drillship day rate that fits every enquiry. Ask for the rate basis and validity, mobilisation and demobilisation, minimum duration, standby, maintenance and excluded services. Clarify when billing begins and what evidence establishes acceptance.

Confirm the legal contractor and its authority to offer the vessel. Separate rig services from specialist drilling, completion and subsea packages. Verify current service permissions and the rig and well approval requirements through the relevant authorities before an award.

Start a drillship sourcing enquiry with Wigmore

Send the programme window, location region, water depth, anticipated duration and approved technical brief. Wigmore can help structure the procurement enquiry and related logistics discussion. We do not present an unverified owned drillship fleet, guaranteed availability or an operating contractor appointment through this page.

Before requesting a firm quotation

Can an online guide confirm a rate or available asset?

No. A meaningful offer needs a defined scope, named provider or asset, current availability and commercial validity. Ask for the assumptions, exclusions and acceptance conditions in writing.

What can Wigmore help organise?

Send the procurement gap, location, programme window and approved technical brief. The team can scope sourcing, equipment and logistics requirements and confirm which specialist services can be included. Technical authority and operating responsibilities must be agreed with the named qualified parties.

Check the proposed service provider through NUPRC’s official OGISP portal and confirm the applicable rig and well approvals with the relevant authority.
