Fleet renewal can leave an owner deciding whether to sell an older vessel for continued use, recycle it or dispose of several assets in stages. The right decision depends on more than a market headline. Wigmore Trading accepts enquiries for marine asset disposal sourcing and procurement coordination involving Nigeria, Africa and international counterparties. Valuation, specialist advice and any brokerage mandate require an agreed project scope.

Compare options on a consistent date and basis

Use a common set of assumptions for condition, delivery, currency and completion timing. Compare a realistic resale proposal with a realistic recycling proposal. An optimistic second-hand asking price is not equivalent to an inspected buyer offer. Record what evidence is available, what remains conditional and how long each proposal is valid.

Decision factor Resale consideration Recycling consideration
Condition What repairs, surveys or other work would the buyer require? What preparation and delivery condition would the facility accept?
Timing How credible is the buyer’s funding and completion timetable? Is a receiving slot and lawful delivery route confirmed?
Costs What holding, repair, marketing and transaction costs remain? What movement, preparation, commission and disposal costs remain?
Liability Which warranties, representations and post-sale obligations are proposed? How are destination, waste and completion responsibilities documented?
Net proceeds Use a qualified, evidence-based comparison. Use the same currency, date and cost assumptions.

Do not equate a higher gross price with a better exit

A vessel might attract a higher resale bid but require months of holding costs and substantial repairs. A recycling offer may complete sooner yet involve expensive towage or unresolved acceptance conditions. Build a net-proceeds schedule and test the effect of delay. Include uncertainty rather than selecting only the most favourable number from each option. Qualified financial and maritime advisers should review material assumptions.

Disposing of a fleet rather than one ship

Prepare an asset register with the identity, ownership, location, status and information gaps for each unit. Group similar assets where it helps bidders, but allow exceptions for ships needing separate technical or compliance treatment. A blanket fleet discount can conceal an attractive offer for one ship and a weak offer for another. Ask for a unit-by-unit allocation as well as a package price.

Choose a transparent sale process

A private negotiation, competitive tender or auction should have clear eligibility criteria, information access and an approved decision owner. Verify the legal buyer, authority to act and payment arrangements. Maintain confidentiality and record conflicts of interest. Wigmore can help scope commercial sourcing and comparison requirements; a general enquiry does not appoint an auctioneer, create a regulated advisory engagement or authorise a sale.

Government and defence fleet disposal

Public or naval assets require confirmation of the lawful disposal authority and applicable procurement process. Security-sensitive equipment, records and materials may need separate treatment under the owner’s authorised procedures. Do not advertise a vessel as freely available merely because it is laid up. Expressions of interest and tender participation should follow the published or formally communicated owner requirements.

Improve the decision with sensitivity analysis

Test lower sale proceeds, increased preparation costs, delayed completion and currency changes. Identify the point at which one disposal option becomes less attractive than another. A recycling ROI analysis should state whether it refers to an owner’s exit proceeds, a buyer’s margin or a facility investment; those are different commercial questions. No general article can guarantee a maximum scrap value.

Plan a staged exit with Wigmore

Send a redacted fleet summary, preferred options, decision timetable and the services needed. Say whether you need counterpart research, tender organisation, comparable quotations or logistics support. We can help shape the enquiry and confirm available specialist dependencies. Keep original ownership documents, bank details and confidential operating records out of the first message; the team can explain the appropriate next step.

Discuss your marine project with Wigmore Trading

Send a non-confidential vessel or project summary, location, your role and target dates. We can help scope sourcing, procurement and logistics requirements, with provider capability and specialist responsibilities confirmed for the project.
