A loan-book review should explain what the portfolio contains, how it performs and which uncertainties matter to the decision. A purchaser, lender’s risk team and financial-reporting team may use related data while needing different analysis and reports.

Wigmore Trading welcomes portfolio-review planning and specialist-coordination enquiries in Nigeria. We can help define the information and workstreams required. Formal valuation, audit, accounting conclusions and regulated activities require appropriately qualified providers.

State the purpose and perimeter

Identify the portfolios, products, reporting date and intended use. Distinguish underwriting quality review, acquisition due diligence, non-performing-loan assessment and accounting impairment work. A single dashboard does not automatically cover every purpose.

Review Questions to establish
Performance Arrears, collections, defaults, restructurings and recoveries
Underwriting quality Evidence, policy compliance, approvals and exceptions
Credit due diligence Risk, enforceability, concentration and information gaps
ECL or valuation Applicable method, cash flows, assumptions and professional review

Reconcile the loan data

Define balances, dates, status codes, interest treatment and modifications. Reconcile the loan tape to appropriate records and identify missing fields. A model built on inconsistent data can produce precise-looking but unreliable results.

Explain segmentation, concentrations and vintage performance. Compare like-for-like periods and avoid interpreting a changing portfolio mix as a pure improvement in underwriting.

Separate PD, LGD and expected credit loss

Probability of default, loss given default and exposure measures answer distinct questions. Model selection, calibration, scenario assumptions and validation should fit the portfolio and intended use.

IFRS 9 provides the accounting framework for relevant expected-credit-loss assessments. Qualified accounting and modelling professionals must determine applicable requirements, current amendments and the evidence supporting their work.

Assess collateral and recovery assumptions

Review security, title, valuation, costs and expected timing with legal and valuation specialists. A collateral figure is not the same as cash recovered. Non-performing portfolios can involve incomplete records and uncertain enforcement.

For loan portfolio valuation, distinguish contractual balances, expected cash receipts, transaction price and accounting carrying value. They need not be equal.

Set reporting and reliance

Specify the report, limitations, intended users, review date and access. Explain whether file testing is sampled or comprehensive and how findings affect the analysis. Document unresolved issues and sensitivity to key assumptions.

Use controlled data access, confidentiality and appropriate privacy safeguards. Portfolio analysis does not justify uncontrolled circulation of borrower identity or financial records.

Does a portfolio review guarantee future performance?

No. Credit outcomes and recoveries remain uncertain. A review should make evidence and limitations clearer.

What should I send Wigmore?

Provide institution type, portfolio category, approximate scale, purpose and timetable without identifiable loan data initially. The team can discuss a suitable review scope.

Prepare your enquiry brief

Note your organisation type, location, purpose, required deliverable, systems or products involved and target dates. Identify the responsible decision-maker and distinguish preparation, analysis, administration and regulated activities.

Start with non-confidential project details. Do not send medical, identity, borrower, policyholder or private financial records through an initial sales enquiry. Agree scope, permissions and controlled access first. This checklist does not submit information.
