Business loan underwriting should connect the purpose of borrowing with a realistic source of repayment. Collateral, turnover and a persuasive proposal cannot replace analysis of cash flow, obligations and the risks affecting the borrower.

Wigmore Trading welcomes commercial-credit analysis and project-coordination enquiries in Nigeria. We can discuss the required review and specialist support. Lending decisions, regulated credit activities and any finance offer remain with the responsible authorised institution.

Define the facility and use of funds

Working capital, invoice finance, trade finance, equipment finance, project finance and agricultural lending have different cash cycles. Identify the borrower, amount, currency, term, purpose and repayment source before choosing a generic appraisal template.

Facility Questions for assessment
Working capital or invoice finance Receivables, collections, inventory and cash-cycle timing
Equipment or vehicle finance Asset, business use, cash generation and security
Project or construction finance Costs, completion risks, contracts and funding dependencies
SME or startup credit Evidence quality, owners’ role and realistic repayment capacity

Review the financial evidence

Reconcile financial statements, management records and bank information where appropriately available. Distinguish cash receipts from sales, recurring income from one-off items and business activity from unrelated transfers.

A bank statement does not explain every economic fact on its own. Record missing information and assumptions. The lender’s approved process should determine how documents and third-party information are obtained and checked.

Assess affordability and downside

Review existing debts, operating costs, seasonality, working capital and planned investment. Debt-service coverage analysis should use defined cash-flow and debt-service measures. There is no universal ratio that guarantees approval for every borrower.

Stress important assumptions such as demand, margins, collections, currency and rates. The CBN consumer-protection regulations provide responsible-lending requirements for relevant institutions. Have the institution’s specialists determine the applicable rules and assessment.

Review security and documents separately

Secured and unsecured facilities present different questions, but collateral should not conceal weak repayment capacity. Qualified legal and valuation professionals should review title, value, enforceability and relevant documentation.

Consider covenants, guarantees, repayment timing and pricing through the lender’s approved framework. A collateral value or proposed loan-to-value figure is not an approval decision.

Prepare a decision-ready appraisal

Specify the credit memo’s scope, evidence, key risks, assumptions and outstanding issues. State who reviews and approves it. Analysis support does not create a credit committee’s authority.

For banks, microfinance institutions, fintech lenders and cooperatives, confirm the actual regulatory and governance context. Do not assume every institution can use the same policy or outsourcing arrangement.

Does a completed appraisal guarantee a loan?

No. The lender assesses the application and confirms any terms.

What should I send Wigmore?

Start with institution type, facility category, review purpose and required deliverable. Private borrower and bank records should follow agreed confidentiality and access arrangements.

Prepare your enquiry brief

Note your organisation type, location, purpose, required deliverable, systems or products involved and target dates. Identify the responsible decision-maker and distinguish preparation, analysis, administration and regulated activities.

Start with non-confidential project details. Do not send medical, identity, borrower, policyholder or private financial records through an initial sales enquiry. Agree scope, permissions and controlled access first. This checklist does not submit information.

Scope your project with Wigmore Trading

Send a non-confidential brief so we can discuss practical preparation, procurement or coordination support. The actual provider, professional scope, permissions, deliverables and commercial terms are confirmed for the engagement.
