Internet failover in Nigeria is the process of moving traffic to another connection when the preferred path becomes unusable. It can help an office, shop or warehouse continue operating, but the result depends on circuit diversity, router capability, detection settings and the application itself. Wigmore Trading can discuss dual-WAN and multi-ISP procurement requirements for a defined resilience project.
Dual WAN, load balancing and bonding are different
A dual-WAN router can connect to two upstream services. Depending on its supported configuration, one may be standby or both may carry traffic. Traditional load balancing commonly assigns separate flows to different links; it does not automatically give a single download the combined speed of both subscriptions.
Bandwidth aggregation or bonding requires specific technology and may need compatible equipment or a service at the far end. Cisco’s per-packet load-balancing documentation illustrates a feature that distributes one flow across paths and handles packet reordering. That is a product-specific capability, not a promise made by every multi-WAN appliance.
Choose independent backup links
Two ISP invoices do not prove two independent paths. Ask about physical entry points, last-mile routes, upstream dependencies and power. A mobile backup can provide a different access route, but indoor signal, congestion, data limits and equipment power still matter. Verify the chosen location and business hours.
Do not overlook the customer-side equipment. Both links may depend on one router, one switch and one power socket. Decide whether redundant hardware, a spare device or a documented replacement process is justified by the cost of interruption.
Detect more than a disconnected cable
A connection may remain physically up while applications become unusable. Define checks for meaningful external reachability, excessive packet loss or unacceptable delay. Avoid relying on a single test destination whose failure could trigger unnecessary switching. Settings should balance detection speed against repeated changes between unstable links.
Agree how traffic returns to the preferred path. Immediate failback can interrupt work again if the primary connection is not stable. Specify any hold-down period and test recovery in the same way as failure.
What happens to existing sessions?
A new public IP address can require a call, VPN, remote desktop or payment session to reconnect. Some applications handle this better than others. Ask for an observed recovery result using your actual service. Do not accept “zero downtime” merely because the router supports automatic failover.
| Test | Useful observation |
|---|---|
| Primary link disconnected | Detection time, rerouting and application recovery. |
| Slow or lossy link | Whether the agreed threshold triggers a path change. |
| Backup only | Capacity for essential users and applications. |
| Power interruption | Continuity of routers, modems, switches and access points. |
Control bandwidth during backup operation
Prioritise critical business traffic and limit nonessential transfers when the backup has lower capacity or metered data. Record which services must keep working and which may pause. A large cloud backup should not consume the mobile allowance intended for transactions.
Get a scoped failover quote
Send Wigmore your address, current circuits, router model, traffic requirements and outage examples. Include whether you need equipment supply, configuration support, additional connectivity procurement or an SD-WAN assessment. The proposal should separate circuit charges, hardware, licences, implementation and ongoing support, with recovery targets confirmed through acceptance testing.
