Solar versus generator comparisons in Nigeria are useful only when both options serve the same loads for the same hours. Solar, batteries, petrol or diesel generation and grid supply may form part of one hybrid design. Wigmore Trading can discuss equipment sourcing and project requirements for reducing generator dependence or improving backup power.

Bring operating records: load measurements, generator hours, fuel purchases, maintenance bills and outage patterns. These provide a stronger starting point than a generic claim that solar is always cheaper.

Compare the energy service

A small portable battery supporting phones and lights is not equivalent to a generator powering a workshop. List essential loads, peak demand, operating hours and acceptable interruptions. Include motor starting and the ability to restart after a long outage.

Solar produces energy when the resource is available. Batteries store energy and have limits on power, usable capacity and charging. A generator consumes fuel and requires maintenance. A workable comparison must include the components needed for each design to deliver the required service.

Use actual generator costs

Record fuel consumed during representative operation rather than using only tank size or the manufacturer’s ideal figure. Include servicing, oil, consumables, repairs, operator time and replacement planning. Separate costs that disappear after a change from costs that remain because the generator is retained as backup.

If fuel prices or operating hours vary, use several scenarios. A generator running lightly loaded for many hours can have different economics from one used briefly at high demand. The site’s own records should drive the model.

Include the complete solar cost

Cost group Items to account for
Initial Panels, inverter, batteries, mounting, protection, installation and commissioning.
Recurring Maintenance, monitoring, insurance where applicable and finance charges.
Future Component replacement, battery degradation and system expansion.
Remaining supply Grid bills and generator fuel still required after installation.

Estimate savings without double counting

Count the energy that actually displaces a cost. Solar generated when the site cannot use or store it may not produce the assumed saving. Do not add avoided grid and generator costs for the same kilowatt-hour. Check whether fixed charges remain payable.

Compare a base case with lower generation, higher maintenance and different fuel prices. Report the assumptions beside any estimated payback. There is no universal payback period that applies to every Nigerian home or business.

Resilience and practical constraints

A hybrid design may reduce generator hours while retaining backup for extended low generation or unusually high demand. Confirm how the sources interact, how batteries recharge and what loads are prioritised. A larger battery alone does not fix a system that lacks enough charging energy.

Roof space, safe battery location, noise, fuel handling and access also affect the decision. Qualified designers and installers should assess protection, isolation and integration. A proposal for “24-hour power” should state the load and operating assumptions and demonstrate the relevant scenarios.

Request a comparative assessment

Send Wigmore your current setup, records and the improvement you want. Tell us whether the priority is lower fuel use, essential-load backup, commercial uptime or an off-grid system. We can discuss procurement and specialist assessment requirements for a scoped offer.

Ask for the cost comparison and technical design together. Choosing a solution solely from an attractive monthly saving can leave the site with inadequate backup, while oversizing every component may make the project unnecessarily expensive.
