Post-trade processing turns an executed transaction into confirmed obligations, reconciled records and completed settlement. For Nigerian brokers, institutions and technology teams, the practical question is who owns every handoff and exception. Wigmore Trading accepts preparation and systems-procurement enquiries. It does not provide custody, clearing, settlement or account operation through this guide.

What is the current T+1 position?

The SEC’s 15 May 2026 circular announced T+1 for equities and commodities cleared and settled by CSCS from 1 June 2026. Its 12 August 2026 clarification specifies settlement at 5 p.m. T+1 for the affected instruments. It also states that foreign portfolio investors are not required to prefund, while their facilitating operators must maintain controls for timely funding and settlement. Reviewed 8 November 2026; confirm current instrument-specific instructions with the responsible venue, broker and custodian. Do not extend this statement to every Nigerian instrument or market.

Lifecycle stage Control to specify
Capture and confirmation Consistent trade identifiers, economics, counterparties and status
Matching and allocation Agreed instructions, deadlines, corrections and unresolved items
Cash and securities readiness Responsible funding parties, validated instructions and exception escalation
Settlement Authoritative completion evidence and failed-trade handling
Reconciliation Source records, breaks, ownership and signed-off corrections

Reconcile positions, securities and cash separately

A balanced trade file does not prove that cash or securities moved correctly. Compare order and execution records, broker confirmations, custody statements, settlement records and the accounting ledger using the appropriate identifiers. Define tolerances carefully and investigate unexplained differences. Assign an owner and resolution date to each break, preserving the source evidence and approval for adjustments.

Design for exceptions as well as normal trades

Test late allocations, changed settlement instructions, corporate actions, rejected messages, missing confirmations and failed settlement. Clarify how holidays, cut-offs and cross-border handoffs affect the process. Record who can change instructions and how those changes are independently validated. A team should know how to escalate an unresolved issue before the applicable deadline, rather than discovering it in an end-of-day report.

Custody and depository integration require clear permissions

Ask which entity holds assets, which party submits instructions and which source confirms finality. Verify the actual provider’s status and scope through the SEC register and applicable market records. Access to an integration interface does not itself create custody permission or a direct depository relationship. Contracts should allocate support, data ownership, incident handling and exit responsibilities.

Include corporate actions and records retention

Distributions, reorganisations and other corporate actions can change entitlements or positions and create reconciliation breaks. Require a documented source, event status, accountable review and correction process. Ask the relevant professionals to determine disclosure, reporting and retention obligations. Keep original and amended records linked so an audit can explain what changed, who approved it and which customers or accounts were affected.

Evaluate post-trade software with end-to-end tests

Use a controlled test covering capture, matching, funding checks, settlement messages, reconciliation and reporting. Include duplicate messages and corrected trades. Request evidence that failed items remain visible until resolved, and that access restrictions prevent unauthorised instruction changes. Compare implementation, connectivity, data migration, support and ongoing operational costs rather than only licence fees.

Discuss preparation and procurement support

Send the instruments, participating entities, current systems, process gaps and desired deliverables without disclosing live customer or account records. Wigmore can clarify an appropriate business-support scope and required specialist involvement. Trade instructions, settlement bank details and sensitive transaction evidence should use the appointed provider’s approved channels.

Discuss your preparation requirement

Send a non-confidential brief describing the support you need, project stage and timetable. Wigmore Trading can clarify available research and procurement-coordination scope and specialist dependencies before any engagement.
