Trading risk management connects a firm’s permitted activities to exposures it can identify, fund, monitor and escalate. A desk may appear profitable while carrying concentrated inventory, unsettled obligations or unreliable prices. This guide helps Nigerian institutions prepare a risk-control and systems brief. Wigmore Trading can discuss commercial preparation and procurement coordination; risk decisions and trading mandates remain with the responsible authorised institution.

Define the desk and its risk owners

Separate client execution, proprietary positions, market-making obligations and treasury activity. Record who approves the mandate, owns each limit, monitors usage and authorises exceptions. Risk and compliance oversight should have a clear escalation route independent of the immediate revenue objective. A system dashboard is useful only if someone is accountable for the decisions it prompts.

Risk area Control question
Market and inventory Which positions, concentrations and price changes are monitored?
Counterparty and credit How are exposures aggregated across products and unsettled activity?
Liquidity and funding Can obligations be met under stressed timing and market conditions?
Settlement and operations Who investigates unmatched trades, breaks and failed payments?
Technology and models What happens when data, models or connectivity fail?

Make limits enforceable and traceable

A limit specification should identify the exposure measure, scope, currency, time horizon, data source, owner and escalation. Clarify the treatment of pending orders and unsettled trades. Distinguish preventive checks from retrospective reports. Test whether permissions prevent unauthorised limit changes and whether approved exceptions expire. Procurement documentation should describe required behaviour without assuming a vendor already supports it.

Inventory, quotes and market-making obligations

Market makers need visibility over positions and the conditions attached to their actual appointment. Monitor quote coverage and exceptions against the relevant programme rather than a generic software default. Changes in spread or displayed size require appropriate governance and venue compliance. No inventory policy should direct artificial volume, misleading quotes or a predetermined security price. For programme context, consult the NGX market-making overview.

Use VaR and stress testing with stated limitations

Value-at-risk estimates depend on model assumptions, data and the selected horizon. They do not describe every possible loss. Stress scenarios should also consider concentration, disrupted funding, unavailable prices and operational incidents. Ask qualified risk professionals how assumptions are challenged and results feed into decisions. This guide does not prescribe a portfolio, hedge or risk limit for any institution.

Reconcile P&L with positions and cash

Real-time P&L can differ from reviewed financial results because of valuation, timing, fees or incomplete records. Establish an explanation of realised and unrealised results, pricing changes, funding costs and adjustments. Investigate discrepancies between the desk, risk platform, back office and accounting records. Retain the source and approval for manual corrections rather than hiding breaks behind an aggregated number.

Test the escalation process

Include scenarios such as stale market data, an unconfirmed trade, a breached limit, a delayed settlement and a vendor outage. Identify the responsible contacts, permitted actions and approval evidence. Review how a controlled halt, recovery and restart would work under the institution’s policies. A business-continuity document should be exercised and revised after lessons are identified.

Prepare a risk-system procurement enquiry

Share the proposed desk scope, instruments, reporting frequency, integration requirements and control objectives at a non-confidential level. Ask vendors to price implementation, data, support, change requests and independent validation separately. Wigmore can discuss the available preparation scope and specialist dependencies. Keep positions, counterparties, live limits and account credentials out of an initial message.

Discuss your preparation requirement

Send a non-confidential brief describing the support you need, project stage and timetable. Wigmore Trading can clarify available research and procurement-coordination scope and specialist dependencies before any engagement.
