Trade finance underwriting assesses a transaction, its counterparties and the proposed source of repayment. An importer seeking finance for stock and an exporter awaiting buyer payment have different risks and evidence needs. Wigmore Trading accepts commercial sourcing, procurement and logistics enquiries that can support preparation. A bank, financier, insurer or other authorised provider retains its own approval and terms.

Describe the underlying trade first

Identify the goods, supplier, buyer, origin, destination, value, agreed delivery terms and payment sequence. State whether the transaction is a confirmed order, a proposed purchase or a repeat supply relationship. Financing should be linked to verifiable commercial activity. An invoice or purchase order on its own does not establish authenticity, enforceability or a buyer’s ability to pay.

Finance enquiry Questions for the responsible provider
Import or export finance Which transaction stage is funded and what evidence supports repayment?
Letter of credit or bank guarantee Who issues it, what conditions apply and which documents are required?
Invoice discounting or factoring Is the receivable valid, assignable and subject to disputes or deductions?
Purchase-order or inventory finance How are performance, ownership, storage and sale risks assessed?
Supply-chain or commodity finance Which counterparties, goods controls and cross-border dependencies matter?

Counterparty verification

Confirm the legal identities and authority of the supplier and buyer through appropriate records and independent checks. Review the actual contracting party and verify payment instructions through trusted channels. Beneficial ownership, sanctions, fraud and other compliance checks should be scoped by the responsible professionals. Do not infer reliability from a polished website or a forwarded certificate.

Goods, documentation and delivery risk

Review specifications, quality evidence, inspection arrangements and the documents required at each stage. Clarify who handles shipping, insurance, customs and delivery. Delayed or non-conforming goods can weaken the expected cash cycle even when the invoice appears profitable. Wigmore can help scope sourcing and logistics requirements; specialist inspection, legal and finance responsibilities must be agreed separately.

Cash-flow and currency assumptions

Explain when money leaves the business and when it is realistically collected. Include stockholding, freight, clearance, payment delays and any disputed amounts. Ask qualified financial advisers to assess currency exposure, financing costs and downside cases. No generic trade-finance article can determine an appropriate facility amount or guarantee a repayment source.

Know what an instrument does not prove

A proposed letter of credit, guarantee or insurance policy needs review of issuer, authenticity, terms, conditions and coverage. Do not treat a document title as an unconditional payment promise. Any confirmation, issuance, discounting or cover must come from the authorised provider under its actual terms. A Wigmore sourcing enquiry does not create a financial instrument.

Prepare a comparable funding brief

Keep commercial, logistics and financial records consistent. Ask the provider for required documents, eligibility, charges, conditions and the basis of its decision. Avoid claims of instant approval or guaranteed release. The CBN’s responsible-lending provisions provide relevant consumer-credit context; professionals should determine which rules apply to the particular corporate or trade arrangement.

Discuss the commercial support needed

Send Wigmore a redacted transaction summary, goods specification, route, stage and target dates. Tell us whether the gap concerns supplier sourcing, verification coordination, procurement or logistics planning. We can clarify available support and professional dependencies. Keep account details, confidential financial statements and personal identifiers out of the first message.

Discuss your requirement with Wigmore Trading

Send a non-confidential brief describing your organisation’s role, location, required support and target dates. We can help scope sourcing, procurement, integration or preparatory business support, with specialist capability and professional responsibilities confirmed for the project.
