Merchant underwriting helps a payment provider assess a business before and during a commercial relationship. It is different from approving a loan or guaranteeing that every transaction is legitimate. Wigmore Trading accepts enquiries for software procurement, integration planning and business-process support. Merchant-account acceptance and regulated financial decisions remain with the responsible authorised institution or provider.

Define the merchant and service

Describe the business model, products, customers, countries and expected payment flows. Distinguish an ecommerce merchant, physical POS business and a marketplace handling third-party sellers. State whether the request concerns initial onboarding, a periodic review or a change in activity. A generic risk label cannot replace assessment of the actual business and service.

Review area Evidence to organise
Business identity Corporate records, trading names, authority and relevant ownership information.
Commercial activity Products, fulfilment, refund terms and expected transaction pattern.
Financial exposure Settlement timing, disputes, refunds and any proposed credit risk.
Compliance Applicable permissions, provider policies and KYC/AML review requirements.
Operations Case ownership, exceptions, monitoring and escalation.

KYC and ownership verification

Use appropriate authorised sources to check the business and persons relevant to the review. Keep the purpose, access and retention of personal data controlled. A successful registry match does not establish that all licence, ownership, activity or risk questions are resolved. The responsible provider should define what evidence is required and who can approve exceptions.

Merchant fraud and credit risks differ

A payment business can face transaction abuse, fulfilment disputes, refund exposure and other risks. Credit assessment, where relevant, needs its own repayment analysis. Explain the risk being evaluated and avoid treating every unusual pattern as proven fraud. Decisions affecting access or financial terms require an authorised review process and appropriate handling of errors or appeals.

Software and workflow requirements

Define intake, document review, verification, case management and decision recording. Ask vendors which integrations are available and which need custom work. Automated risk scores should be explainable and evaluated using relevant evidence. A rules engine does not grant regulatory authority or remove the institution’s responsibility for its policies and final decisions.

Payment-provider responsibilities

Confirm the actual contracting provider, service scope, authorisations and partner dependencies. The CBN’s payment-service-provider resources provide Nigerian regulatory background. A technology integration or initial Wigmore consultation does not establish a payment licence, merchant-acquiring appointment or permission to hold customer funds.

Data protection and review controls

Limit the information collected to the approved purpose and use secure channels for sensitive records. Define who may see documents, how findings are recorded and when access ends. Review data-protection obligations with the responsible privacy and legal teams, using the NDPC’s guidance as background. Do not send live merchant files, personal identifiers or credentials in an open sales enquiry.

Start a merchant-risk support enquiry

Send Wigmore a non-sensitive description of your role, merchant population, current systems, review objectives and dates. We can help scope platform sourcing, integration and process requirements, with specialist and provider dependencies confirmed. This page does not promise merchant approval, an unrestricted account, a loan decision or a way around a provider’s high-risk-business policies.

Discuss your requirement with Wigmore Trading

Send a non-confidential brief describing your organisation’s role, location, required support and target dates. We can help scope sourcing, procurement, integration or preparatory business support, with specialist capability and professional responsibilities confirmed for the project.
