A microinsurance API project should connect a customer journey to an authorised insurer’s processes without hiding who provides the cover. Whether the channel is a bank, fintech, telco or merchant platform, buyers need to understand enrolment, policy confirmation, payments and servicing as one connected workflow.

Wigmore Trading welcomes microinsurance technology and integration enquiries. Bring the proposed insurer and channel requirements so supported capabilities, provider access and implementation responsibilities can be confirmed. No proprietary insurance API or carrier partnership is promised by this guide.

Map the policy lifecycle

List the actions customers and staff need: view product information, submit an application, receive a decision, confirm active cover, update permitted details, renew, cancel where allowed and start a claim. Each action needs an owning system and an understandable status.

Keep application submitted, premium received and policy active separate. The insurer’s agreed process determines when cover begins. An app should not show a customer as insured solely because a payment request was created.

What to ask an integration provider

  • Which insurer and products are supported, and under what agreement?
  • What documentation, sandbox access and test data are available?
  • Which actions are synchronous and which depend on later events?
  • How are failed, duplicated or delayed messages resolved?
  • Who owns customer service when the channel and insurer disagree?

Require a demonstration of an exception, not just a successful purchase. A useful test might include a paid premium with a delayed policy response, followed by status enquiry and a clear customer update.

Integrate payments with policy records

Assign references that let finance match customer collections to insurer remittances and policy periods. Define refunds, failed renewals and differences between the amount charged and the amount due. An accounting adjustment should not silently change a policy’s coverage dates.

Where recurring collections are proposed, confirm the payment provider’s supported authorisation method and how the customer may manage it. Avoid implying an arbitrary wallet debit is permitted simply because the platform stores an account reference.

Design agent and portal access

An agent-assisted interface should display approved product explanations and capture the customer’s choice. Staff should only see information necessary for their role. Restrict access to sensitive claims records and keep sales staff from altering underwriting or claims outcomes.

Record product wording versions and the notices shown during enrolment. An operational audit should be able to reconstruct what the customer was offered, not just show the latest version of a marketing page.

Test failure and recovery

Test Expected evidence
Duplicate application A controlled response without unintended duplicate cover
Delayed policy response Status enquiry and accurate customer messaging
Failed renewal payment Correct policy status and agreed notification workflow
Provider outage Visible incident ownership and safe recovery

Agree versioning, change notice, monitoring and support after launch. Clarify data ownership, retention and export arrangements before procurement. A demonstration environment does not prove that production access has been approved.

Can one API serve several countries?

Potentially at a technical level, but local insurance arrangements and compliance need separate review. Do not copy Nigerian policy assumptions into another market.

How do I request a scoped discussion?

Send the country, customer channel, proposed products, insurer status and systems to connect. Use redacted process examples. Wigmore can discuss the project and confirm what can be offered after review.

Prepare your project enquiry

Before contacting us, note your operating country and locations, organisation type, existing systems, priority problems, expected scale and desired pilot date. List the capabilities you need and the evidence you want to see in a demonstration. Do not send passwords, API secrets, identity documents or customer financial and health records through an initial enquiry.

This checklist is for your own preparation; it does not submit or store information.
