Your message tells us which page you came from

Microinsurance distribution works best when the channel fits the customer’s everyday life and the product addresses a clearly defined risk. A merchant, farmer or delivery rider may value accessible protection, but each audience has different income patterns, evidence needs and ways of asking for help. One generic enrolment campaign is unlikely to serve them all well.

Wigmore Trading welcomes enquiries about distribution strategy, operational planning and technology requirements for microinsurance projects. Confirm the authorised insurer, product and distribution arrangements before offering cover. This is not an offer of a particular insurance policy.

Match the channel to the audience

Audience Questions to explore with the insurer
Farmers What risk is covered, how is a loss assessed and how does timing fit the farming cycle?
Merchants and SMEs Which assets or events are covered and what evidence can a small business reasonably provide?
Gig workers Does the product fit irregular earnings and the actual work performed?
Cooperatives Who enrols members, maintains records and handles changes?

Do not assume that all agricultural losses, business interruptions or medical expenses are covered. The insurer’s product wording defines the insured event and exclusions. Explain these before asking a customer to enrol.

Fintech, bank and telco channels need defined roles

An existing app or agent network may provide a convenient way to reach customers, but audience access is different from permission to distribute insurance. Review the commercial and regulatory arrangements, training, customer communication and complaints ownership.

For a mobile-money or payment channel, separate the payment service from the insurance contract. The customer should know who provides cover and where to obtain policy or claims assistance. A successful collection does not by itself answer those questions.

Make assisted sales accountable

Provide approved explanations, avoid pressure-selling and record the customer’s choice. Incentives should encourage accurate communication and service quality. Training should cover exclusions, premium handling, privacy and escalation, not just a sales script.

Test customer understanding with a realistic scenario. Can a customer explain the event covered, the amount payable, the main exclusions and how to claim? If not, simplifying the interface alone may not solve the communication problem.

Pilot before expanding

Choose representative groups and monitor enrolment quality, policy confirmation, failed payments, support contacts and complaints. Review why customers decline or discontinue. High signup numbers can conceal misunderstanding or weak service.

Include the insurer and distribution staff in the pilot review. Agree how product feedback will be handled without changing benefits or wording informally. Any changes need the proper approval process.

Regional expansion needs local review

Microinsurance distribution in Africa is not a single legal or operating market. Country rules, insurer permissions, languages, payment methods and customer-service access can differ. Maintain a separate country assessment and confirm local responsibilities before launch.

Budget for integration, training, field support, premium reconciliation and claims assistance. Do not present a distribution opportunity as a guaranteed investment return. A commercial model needs evidence about costs and actual customer outcomes.

Can Wigmore provide a ready-made policy?

Discuss the target market and project first. Available products, insurer relationships and permitted roles must be confirmed; this page does not promise cover or a particular partnership.

What makes a useful first brief?

Share the audience, countries, channel size, proposed insurer and support needs. Wigmore can discuss how distribution planning and technology procurement might fit the project and confirm the next steps.

Prepare your project enquiry

Before contacting us, note your operating country and locations, organisation type, existing systems, priority problems, expected scale and desired pilot date. List the capabilities you need and the evidence you want to see in a demonstration. Do not send passwords, API secrets, identity documents or customer financial and health records through an initial enquiry.

This checklist is for your own preparation; it does not submit or store information.
