A diversified business should have several understandable sources of value, not a collection of unrelated promises. Entrepreneurs exploring community-driven, asset-light or hybrid business models in Africa need to define the customer, the service delivered and the cost of delivering it. More revenue streams do not automatically create a stronger company.
Wigmore Trading welcomes commercial planning, sourcing, distribution and operational enquiries for defined projects. This guide is for business-model assessment. It does not offer a fund, collective investment scheme, guaranteed income or a particular investment product.
Build around a real customer problem
A B2B network might combine procurement support, logistics coordination, training and a paid membership. Each service still needs a buyer, deliverable, price and responsible team. Test whether customers value the bundle or prefer separate services.
Asset-light describes an operating choice, not an absence of costs or liabilities. Outsourced delivery needs contracts, quality control and a support process. A partner’s asset base does not remove the need to manage the customer experience.
Separate revenue streams in the model
| Revenue type | Question to test |
|---|---|
| Product margin | What remains after sourcing, delivery, returns and financing costs? |
| Service fee | What specific work does the customer receive? |
| Subscription or membership | What recurring value justifies renewal? |
| Training or certification support | Who delivers it and what credential, if any, is actually recognised? |
A hybrid model should show the economics of each stream before combining them. One profitable activity can conceal losses elsewhere if reporting only presents total revenue.
Community is a relationship to serve
Diaspora networks, professional groups, cooperatives and faith-inspired enterprises can create trusted channels for useful services. Membership should have transparent benefits, charges, cancellation terms and governance. Shared identity is not proof of financial soundness or professional authorisation.
Reward genuine use and service quality rather than relying on recruitment as the source of promised returns. Keep donations, membership payments, trading revenue and any legally structured investment capital distinct in contracts and accounts.
Earn credibility through evidence
A trusted brand needs accurate claims, verifiable experience, consistent delivery and a responsive complaints process. Cultural or heritage positioning can explain a company’s purpose, but it should not replace evidence of capability.
Publish clear service scope and explain what is supplied directly, coordinated through partners or subject to project review. Avoid describing a business as institutional merely because its presentation looks formal. Governance, reporting and accountability are the more useful tests.
Scale one repeatable process at a time
Before entering several countries, prove onboarding, fulfilment, billing, support and supplier management in a manageable pilot. Document which parts can be reused and which depend on local contracts, currency, regulation or customer behaviour.
For an enterprise-services model, assess consulting, facility management, outsourced support and logistics against actual capacity. A broad service menu creates obligations even where a business owns few physical assets.
Can a membership platform also raise investment?
That is a separate legal and regulatory question. Seek qualified advice before soliciting funds. Nigeria’s SEC notice on unregistered investment schemes is a useful reminder to verify regulated status and avoid unrealistic guarantees.
How can Wigmore assist?
Send the intended customers, operating countries, revenue model and practical sourcing or delivery needs. The team can discuss a defined commercial scope and confirm suitable support rather than promise a ready-made profitable business.
Prepare a useful enquiry
Note the project location, intended role, current stage, product or service specification, quantities, delivery point and timetable. Separate confirmed facts from assumptions and identify documents that still need verification. Start with a non-confidential brief; do not submit credentials, personal medical records or restricted project files through a general sales enquiry.
This checklist is for your own preparation and does not submit information.
