Nigeria HS Code & Import Duty Finder

HS code & import duty finder · Nigeria

What will customs charge to bring it in?

Every import into Nigeria is classified under an HS code, and that code sets the duty, VAT and levies you’ll pay at the port. Search by what you’re importing or by code to find the tariff, estimate the full customs charge stack, and see whether NAFDAC or SONCAP approval is likely — the numbers you need before a landed-cost calculation even makes sense.

Estimate the charges

These are indicative figures from the tariff schedule Wigmore holds. Actual classification can hinge on exact product detail, and rates, exchange rates and port charges change — our clearing desk confirms the correct code and the live payable amount before you commit.

How the tariff works

Nigeria’s five duty bands.

Under the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, every product sits in one of five duty rates — broadly, the more essential or raw the goods, the lower the duty.

0%
Essential social goods — some medicines, inputs
5%
Raw materials & basic capital goods
10%
Intermediate goods
20%
Finished consumer goods
35%
Specific goods for domestic protection

Beyond the duty

Duty is only the first line.

Nigeria Customs applies a stack of charges. The estimator above builds them in this order — here’s what each one is.

ON CIFImport DutyThe headline tariff rate for the HS code, charged on the CIF customs value (cost + insurance + freight).
ON CIFCISS 1%Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme — a 1% inspection charge, calculated on the FOB value.
ON DUTYSurcharge 7%A port-development surcharge charged at 7% of the duty amount.
ON CIFETLS 0.5%ECOWAS levy (0.5%) — not applicable to goods originating within ECOWAS.
ON CIF+DUTY+…VAT 7.5%Charged on the built-up base of CIF plus duty, CISS, surcharge and ETLS.

Where Wigmore fits

Get the code right — before it costs you.

Classifying goods is where importers most often slip: the wrong HS code means the wrong duty, delays, penalties, or a demand notice after the fact. Our clearing desk confirms the correct classification, the current payable amount, and any NAFDAC, SONCAP or other approval you’ll need — then handles the clearance itself.

This finder gets you an informed starting point. A two-minute check with the desk turns it into a number you can bank on.

Straight answers

HS codes & import duty, explained.

What is an HS code, and why does it matter so much?
The Harmonized System (HS) code is an international product-classification number; Nigeria uses a 10-digit version under the ECOWAS Common External Tariff. It’s the single most important fact about your import — it determines your duty rate, VAT, any levy or excise, and whether the goods need agency approval. Get it wrong and every downstream number is wrong too.
How accurate are these figures?
The rates come from the tariff schedule Wigmore holds, and the estimator applies the standard Nigeria Customs charge stack. But classification often turns on precise product detail — material, use, processing — and rates, the customs exchange rate and port charges all change over time. Treat the result as a well-informed estimate, and let our clearing desk confirm the exact code and the live payable amount before you commit money.
Does the estimate include everything I’ll pay at the port?
It covers the government charge stack — duty, CISS, surcharge, ETLS, VAT, and any levy or excise on the code. It does not include flat fees like terminal handling, shipping-line charges, PAAR processing or clearing-agent fees, which vary by shipment and container size. Our desk quotes those, and the landed-cost calculator brings the whole picture together.
Will my goods need NAFDAC or SONCAP approval?
Often, yes. Broadly, regulated food, drugs, cosmetics, chemicals and water fall under NAFDAC, while many manufactured and electrical products need a SONCAP certificate against SON standards. This tool flags the likely regime from the product category, but it’s a guide only — the exact requirement depends on the specific item, and some goods need both or neither. Confirm before you ship, because arriving without the right certificate is expensive.
Are some goods banned from import altogether?
Yes — Nigeria maintains an import prohibition list, and separately some items are restricted or need special permits. If a product falls into a sensitive category the tool will flag it to check, but the prohibition list changes with policy, so always verify the current position with our desk or Customs before buying.
Can Wigmore just handle all of this for me?
That’s the point of the clearing desk. We confirm the code, work out exactly what’s payable, arrange any approvals, and clear the goods through the port. Send us what you’re importing and we’ll take it from there.

This tool provides indicative information from the ECOWAS Common External Tariff schedule held by Wigmore Trading and applies the standard Nigeria Customs charge basis (duty, CISS, surcharge, ETLS, VAT, and any code-specific levy or excise) for estimation only. It is not an official customs ruling, tax advice, or a guarantee of classification, rates or admissibility. Correct HS classification can depend on precise product characteristics; duty rates, the customs exchange rate, levies, port charges and prohibition/approval requirements change over time and are set by the Nigeria Customs Service and relevant agencies (including NAFDAC and SON). Approval and prohibition flags are general category guidance, not a determination for a specific product. Always confirm the current code, payable amount and any permit, NAFDAC or SONCAP requirement with Wigmore’s clearing desk or the relevant authority before committing to an import. Figures exclude flat port, terminal, shipping-line, PAAR and agency fees.
