A secure SMS gateway enquiry should identify what is being protected and where the controls operate. Messaging infrastructure, application APIs and recipient devices present different risks. Wigmore Trading accepts procurement and integration-planning enquiries for Nigeria and Africa; the actual security product, access arrangements and specialist capability must be confirmed before engagement.

Define the threat and the authorised boundary

Separate spam, suspicious traffic, account misuse, sender impersonation and application-generated abuse. Specify whether the customer is an operator, aggregator or enterprise because its authority and available data differ. A firewall proposal should identify the interfaces it covers and the decisions it can make. It does not grant permission to inspect another network or intercept subscriber communications.

Control area Evidence to request
API access Authentication, permission scope, credential handling and audit records.
Traffic review Defined detection objectives, explainable alerts and false-positive handling.
Response Authorised decision owner, escalation, correction and rollback.
Data protection Approved purpose, minimum data, access controls and retention.
Operations Support scope, incident handling and controlled rule changes.

SMS encryption: ask which part is protected

Encryption on an API connection or in a provider’s storage does not make an ordinary SMS end-to-end encrypted between your application and the recipient. Ask suppliers to describe the full data path and the limits of each control. Do not put confidential information into messages merely because a gateway uses TLS. Terms such as “bank grade” should be translated into verifiable requirements, not treated as a security standard.

Review fraud detection claims

Unusual traffic can justify investigation but is not conclusive proof of fraud. Require relevant evaluation evidence, analyst review and a procedure for correcting errors. Define acceptable service impact before enabling restrictive controls. A product that generates many alerts may still create excessive review work or miss the scenarios that matter to your business.

Protect authentication and sensitive workflows

SMS OTP delivery is one component of authentication, not a full identity-proofing or account-security system. The current NIST authentication guidance treats PSTN-based out-of-band authentication as restricted and discusses relevant risk considerations. It is useful security background, not a statement of Nigerian legal requirements. Have qualified teams assess alternatives and the complete recovery and fraud-control process.

Test within written authority

Use approved datasets and bounded scenarios with agreed acceptance criteria. Do not conduct live interception, unsolicited test traffic or third-party probing as part of an informal demonstration. Include privacy, security and operations stakeholders in the review. Confirm how evidence is protected and whether any subcontractor or overseas team receives access.

Commercial scope and operational ownership

Ask who manages rules, reviews findings and approves changes. Include integration, training, tuning, support and incident costs. Clarify whether the provider supplies software alone, professional services or ongoing monitoring. A website description is not a guarantee of continuous security coverage or a promise that every malicious message will be blocked.

Discuss messaging security with Wigmore

Send a non-sensitive summary of your role, systems, markets, risks and desired outcomes. We can help scope provider research and requirements, with technical delivery confirmed separately. Keep credentials, message contents and recipient lists out of the first enquiry. For processing personal data in Nigeria, review the NDPC’s guidance with the responsible privacy and legal team.

Discuss your requirement with Wigmore Trading

Tell us your markets, current systems, required capabilities, scale and target dates. We can help scope sourcing, procurement and integration requirements, with provider access and specialist responsibilities confirmed for the proposed project.

Discuss this requirement on WhatsAppBook an initial consultation

Email a non-sensitive brief to sales@wigmoretrading.com. Keep credentials, subscriber records and live recipient lists out of your initial message.
