An OTP API can help deliver a verification step, but the complete authentication design must address what is being verified and what action follows. Phone-number possession, customer identity and permission to make a payment are different questions. Wigmore Trading accepts enquiries for verification and communications integration planning in Nigeria and Africa.
Send the customer journey, risk level, channels and current systems so the team can assess project scope. Availability, supported methods and production access must be confirmed with the responsible provider.
Define the verification outcome
State whether the service confirms access to a phone number, supports account login or authorises a specific action. Do not label a successful SMS response as a full identity or business verification without the appropriate evidence and process.
For KYC or merchant onboarding, consult the payment KYC and privacy guide. Keep the verification method aligned with the actual risk and applicable requirements.
Assess channels and their limitations
SMS and voice delivery depend on the relevant telecommunications service and have security limitations. The NIST authentication guidance treats PSTN-based out-of-band authentication as restricted and discusses alternatives and risk assessment. It is a technical reference, not a claim of Nigerian product certification.
Twilio’s channel documentation is an example of provider-specific options and trade-offs. Actual availability varies by provider, country and configuration; the reference does not establish a Wigmore partnership.
Prepare an authentication requirements checklist
| Area | Decision to document |
|---|---|
| Purpose | Number possession, login or action confirmation |
| Lifecycle | Issuance, validity, one-time use and failed-attempt handling |
| Abuse controls | Request limits, cost controls and investigation ownership |
| Recovery | Lost number, changed device and alternative authentication |
| Privacy | Data minimisation, retention, access and incident handling |
Control retries and verification state
Define how repeated requests, delayed messages and expired challenges are handled. Use the provider’s supported approach and have the security team approve the lifecycle. Do not let a new request silently reset the controls intended to limit repeated failed attempts.
Keep the challenge linked to its intended user and action. Logs and dashboards should not expose live secrets or unnecessary personal information.
Plan account recovery carefully
Changing a registered number or recovering an account can be more sensitive than the ordinary login flow. Agree the evidence, review and notification process appropriate to the service. A fallback should not bypass the protection the primary method provides.
Include support procedures for customers who cannot receive the selected channel. Recovery design should be reviewed alongside fraud risk and customer accessibility.
Test more than successful delivery
Use approved test data to cover delayed, repeated, incorrect, expired and interrupted journeys. Confirm the state seen by the application, the provider and customer support. A delivered message does not prove a completed authentication.
Record the assumptions and limits of the sandbox. Conduct a controlled production-readiness review with the responsible provider and business owners before launch.
Compare costs and operating evidence
Ask for the pricing basis, destination coverage, charging for attempts or outcomes and support terms. Include expected retries and abuse exposure in the cost model. Do not purchase on a universal delivery or fraud-prevention guarantee.
Use the SMS guide, voice guide and API platform guide to coordinate channel, developer and management requirements.
Discuss a verification integration
Tell Wigmore Trading the service, intended users, countries, authentication purpose, existing provider and systems. Include security owners, required reports and target launch date. We can assess discovery, integration and testing scope and identify provider or specialist dependencies.
