A USSD payment or banking journey combines a customer interface with a regulated financial service and supporting systems. The menu should reflect what the service can actually do and provide a clear result. Wigmore Trading accepts enquiries for integration planning across banking, wallets, bill payments, recharge and commerce workflows.
Send the operating model, proposed providers, markets and customer journey. Production access, financial permissions, operator agreements and supported functions must be confirmed for the actual project.
Keep the channel and financial service distinct
A USSD gateway does not itself establish a banking licence, wallet permission or payment-service approval. Identify the bank or payment provider responsible for each financial function and the organisation responsible for the menu application.
Use the CBN payment service provider information and NCC licensing information as starting points for the relevant roles. Obtain current provider and specialist confirmation for the proposed structure.
Map the customer task
Bank transfers, wallet actions, bill payments, airtime and data purchase each require a defined source of truth. Record the customer instruction, any required review, provider reference and the final business result.
For commerce, connect the payment to the correct order, stock and fulfilment record. A completed menu session should not automatically release goods if payment remains unconfirmed.
Specify the transaction lifecycle
| Stage | What to define |
|---|---|
| Initiation | User intent, eligibility and business reference |
| Authorisation | Required controls under the provider’s approved flow |
| Processing | Pending state and timeout handling |
| Confirmation | Trusted transaction evidence and customer message |
| Exception | Reversal, refund, dispute and reconciliation ownership |
Prevent duplicate business actions
Repeated requests, interrupted sessions and delayed responses need a controlled recovery process. Keep references that allow the existing action to be investigated before another is initiated. Do not encourage repeated payment while the first result is uncertain.
Use provider-documented verification and status handling. The USSD developer guide and existing payment API guide provide planning checklists rather than a claim that interfaces behave identically.
Plan bill payment, recharge and ordering
Confirm the billers, products, operators and destinations actually supported. Define the treatment of incorrect references, unavailable products and delayed fulfilment. A recharge API connection does not automatically cover every data or airtime product.
For shopping and self-service, specify order confirmation, customer support and the evidence needed to resolve an enquiry. Keep payment status and product fulfilment status separately traceable.
Protect customer information and access
Limit data displayed and recorded to the approved purpose. Establish how identity, authentication and account changes are handled by the responsible systems. Phone possession and financial account eligibility are different questions.
Review the verification guide and payment KYC and privacy guide with the project’s security and compliance owners.
Reconcile and support the service
Match customer requests, provider transactions, fees and settlements using the appropriate records. Define who investigates pending items and how the customer is informed. Keep support references safe and avoid exposing sensitive records through informal channels.
Use the payment reconciliation guide for finance requirements and the USSD monitoring guide for operational visibility.
Discuss a USSD financial or commerce project
Tell Wigmore Trading the service, target users, providers, countries, expected transaction profile and back-end systems. Include a flow diagram and required reports. We can assess integration and procurement scope and clarify approval, testing and support dependencies before a written proposal.
