A USSD API evaluation should show how your application handles a full session, not just one successful menu response. Developers need current documentation, a clear business flow and an agreed route from testing to production. Wigmore Trading accepts enquiries to scope USSD development and system integration projects in Nigeria and Africa.

Share your technology stack, intended markets, operators, gateway provider and back-end systems. This guide provides an implementation checklist; access to a particular API, SDK, sandbox or network connection must be confirmed with the responsible provider.

Understand the provider’s session model

Review how the gateway identifies sessions, passes user input and expects application responses. Confirm the documented behaviour for continuation, termination, repeated requests and errors. Different providers can expose different formats and limits.

Keep the network session and the business transaction separate. A menu response may acknowledge an interaction without proving that an order, transfer or account change has completed.

Evaluate documentation and developer support

Ask for authentication guidance, request and response definitions, error handling, versioning and supported SDKs. Confirm environment separation, traffic limits and support escalation. A public sample does not establish that every feature is enabled for your project.

For developer portals or marketplaces, check who provides each API and who supports production incidents. Treat provider documentation as the authority for its interface rather than copying assumptions from another gateway.

Build a representative sandbox plan

Scenario Expected evidence
Normal journey Correct menu, reference and final business result
Invalid input Clear recovery without corrupting the journey state
Delayed back end Defined timeout and pending-result handling
Repeated request No duplicated business action
Interrupted session Understandable restart or status enquiry process

Design secure back-end integration

Identify which system authorises each action and which records are trusted. Keep secrets out of client-facing content, shared screenshots and ordinary support messages. Restrict credentials and administrative permissions by role.

Use the provider’s supported approach for authenticating requests and validating inputs. Record safe correlation references so incidents can be investigated without exposing unnecessary personal or account information.

Handle retries and business-state changes

Define how the application recognises a repeated action and whether it is safe to retry. Preserve the link between the session, customer request and downstream transaction. Do not create another debit or order simply because the first response was slow.

For asynchronous work, agree how the customer learns the final result and how support investigates it. Use the reliability guide and payment workflow guide to align technical and operational decisions.

Test the real operating context

A sandbox may not reproduce live network behaviour, charging or all operator conditions. Confirm production approval and conduct provider-approved acceptance testing for the intended service. Include languages, menu length, user errors and realistic back-end delays.

Document test cases, evidence and outstanding limitations. Avoid claiming country-wide or Africa-wide readiness based only on a local simulation.

Prepare a handover package

Include architecture, flow diagrams, configuration ownership, test results, monitoring and an incident guide. Assign responsibility for code updates, provider changes and business content. Operators and customer support need a clear route to report and resolve failures.

For a developer ecosystem or API marketplace, include onboarding, documentation maintenance and version retirement. The telecom API platform guide covers broader developer and management requirements.

Send your USSD development brief

Tell Wigmore Trading the service, markets, gateway provider, back-end interfaces and required launch date. Share public documentation and a redacted journey diagram rather than live credentials. We can assess discovery, development, testing and support scope and identify provider or specialist dependencies.
