Payment reliability in Nigeria is about handling both normal payments and uncertain outcomes predictably. Customers need clear next steps, while operations needs to know whether a transaction completed before another attempt is made. A second gateway can add options, but it does not automatically solve failures or prevent duplicate charges.
Wigmore Trading accepts enquiries for payment integration assessment and reliability planning. Share your current flow, failure patterns and provider arrangements so the team can scope monitoring, recovery and implementation work. No architecture can justify an unsupported promise of a zero-failure payment gateway.
Define what reliability means for your business
Separate application availability, provider availability, channel performance, transaction completion and settlement. A system can be online while a particular payment method is unavailable. A customer can complete a debit while your application is still waiting for confirmation.
Agree measures and observation periods before comparing offers. Ask how maintenance, external dependencies and incidents are treated in a proposed service commitment. “High uptime” without a definition is difficult to evaluate.
Use clear transaction states
Document the states your order and payment systems recognise, including pending, confirmed, failed, cancelled and reversed where relevant. State transitions should reflect the provider’s current documented behaviour and the business operation involved.
A timeout is an uncertainty to investigate, not proof that no debit occurred. Your process should query or receive the appropriate status evidence before deciding whether another payment attempt is safe.
Make retries controlled
Define which operations can be retried, what reference is retained and how duplicate processing is prevented. Customer communication should distinguish an unresolved attempt from a confirmed failure. Avoid instructing staff or customers to repeatedly submit payment without checking the earlier result.
Replayed notifications should not create another order fulfilment, credit or payout. The developer API guide explains the verification and event-handling questions to include in testing.
Assess failover before adding a provider
| Question | Why to resolve it |
|---|---|
| When may traffic move? | Uncertain transactions must not be duplicated |
| Are channels equivalent? | Eligibility, features and customer journeys may differ |
| What records are preserved? | Orders need traceability across attempts and providers |
| How does finance reconcile? | More providers create more settlements and exceptions |
| Who authorises a switch? | Operations needs controlled responsibility and recovery |
Monitor the complete customer journey
Measure where customers stop, which states remain unresolved and how quickly exceptions are investigated. Break down results by the channels and contexts that matter, without exposing unnecessary customer data. Record denominators so retries do not distort a success-rate comparison.
Alerts should identify an owner, severity and next step. Monitoring that simply produces a large dashboard is less useful than a smaller set of measures tied to a working response process.
Write an incident and recovery plan
Define who contacts providers, communicates with support and decides whether a channel should be paused. Keep safe references and relevant evidence available for investigation. Confirm how unresolved payments will be reconciled after service resumes.
Test the plan with representative scenarios such as delayed confirmation, duplicate events, an unavailable channel or a disrupted connection between systems. Record lessons and correct the implementation before relying on it during a busy period.
Compare support and service commitments
Request the actual support hours, incident reporting route, response definitions and escalation contacts. Separate a response-time promise from a resolution guarantee. Confirm who maintains custom code, connectors and infrastructure after launch.
Ask which dependencies are outside each supplier’s control and what evidence will be used to assess performance. The reconciliation guide covers the finance process needed when technical recovery leaves unresolved records.
Discuss a reliability improvement project
Send Wigmore Trading your current providers, channels, transaction volumes, application architecture and redacted examples of failures. Describe customer impact, operational workload and the measures you want to improve. We can assess a discovery brief and clarify testing, monitoring, recovery and handover scope for the proposed integration.
