Subscription payments in Nigeria need more than a scheduled debit. Your business must define what the customer agreed to buy, when a charge is due, how access changes and what happens if collection fails. SaaS providers, membership organisations and service businesses benefit from a billing plan that finance, support and developers can all understand.
Wigmore Trading accepts enquiries for billing and payment integration planning. Share your product, billing model and current systems so the team can assess the workflow and discuss suitable implementation scope. Recurring capabilities must be confirmed for the specific provider and payment method.
Separate billing from payment collection
Billing determines the amount due and the customer’s obligation. Payment collection attempts to settle that amount. An invoice can exist without being paid, and a payment can arrive without enough information to identify the invoice. Your system needs clear links between customers, subscriptions, invoices and transactions.
Decide which system owns prices, discounts, taxes where applicable and billing periods. Avoid allowing several disconnected systems to calculate the amount independently.
Define the subscription rules
Record the billing cycle, start date, renewal terms, trial policy, cancellation process and any grace period. Explain upgrades, downgrades, paused service and refunds in terms your customers can understand. Obtain appropriate authorisation for the chosen payment arrangement.
Do not assume that a saved payment method permits every future charge or that all channels support recurring collection. Confirm mandate, authentication and notification requirements with the contracted provider for your operating model.
Design invoice and payment-link flows
An invoice should carry a unique reference and show the business, customer, amount, currency, items and relevant dates. Payment links should preserve that reference through confirmation and reconciliation. Decide how staff handle a changed invoice after a link has already been issued.
For partial or combined payments, document the allocation rule and keep the audit history. Ask whether your accounting system can receive the required records without manual re-entry.
Handle failed charges without confusing customers
A failed collection should trigger a defined workflow, not endless automatic attempts. Distinguish a definite failure from an uncertain or pending response before retrying. Set customer communication, retry permissions and escalation according to the provider’s terms and your agreed policy.
Keep service access consistent with the billing state. A customer should not be charged again because an entitlement update was delayed. The payment reliability guide covers duplicate prevention and controlled recovery.
Write a billing test checklist
| Scenario | Expected result to define |
|---|---|
| New subscription | Correct terms, authorisation, invoice and access |
| Renewal | One intended charge and a traceable period record |
| Failed collection | Clear status, customer message and controlled next step |
| Plan change | Agreed pricing and effective date without duplicate billing |
| Cancellation or refund | Authorised action, retained audit trail and correct account status |
Protect customer data and permissions
Use the provider’s supported approach for payment credentials and restrict access to sensitive account changes. Your application should not store unnecessary card or identity information. Agree retention, data export and account-closure procedures for the complete billing setup.
Give support staff a way to investigate an invoice without granting unrestricted refund or account-administration powers. Record who changed a price, cancelled a subscription or approved a credit.
Reconcile collections and revenue records
Compare billed amounts, attempted collections, confirmed payments, refunds, fees and settlement. A dashboard showing gross successful charges does not explain the net amount credited to your bank account. Define exception categories and ownership.
Our reconciliation and reporting guide helps specify finance records. The developer guide covers API and event testing, while the checkout guide addresses the initial customer journey.
Request a billing integration discussion
Send Wigmore Trading your subscription or invoicing model, currencies, customer numbers, billing frequency, current software and required payment channels. Include cancellation and retry policies and the reports finance needs. We can assess discovery and implementation options and clarify provider features, migration work and support responsibilities before a proposal is agreed.
