Buying a laboratory analyzer is a decision about the service your laboratory can reliably deliver, not simply the number of tests printed on a brochure. A clinic starting a small diagnostic unit needs a different package from a referral laboratory processing varied samples throughout the day.
Wigmore Trading helps buyers in Nigeria and other African markets specify and source laboratory equipment. Tell us your test menu, expected workload and facility location so we can assess suitable equipment, consumables and delivery requirements. Actual models, support arrangements and commercial terms are confirmed in the proposal.
Start with the test menu and daily workload
List the tests your qualified laboratory team intends to provide, expected daily volumes and busiest operating period. Include sample types, turnaround expectations and whether work will be referred elsewhere during maintenance. The largest analyzer is not automatically the most economical choice for a new laboratory with low sample volumes.
| Equipment family | Questions for the specification |
|---|---|
| Hematology analyzer | Required parameters, throughput, sample handling and quality-control materials |
| Biochemistry analyzer | Test menu, reagent format, water requirements and running cost |
| Immunoassay analyzer | Assay availability, reagent stability and workflow compatibility |
| PCR and molecular diagnostics | Intended assays, extraction workflow, contamination controls and trained staff |
Price the consumables before committing
Ask whether reagents are open or specific to the platform. Request pack sizes, usable life after opening, storage conditions, control materials, calibrators and expected delivery lead times. An apparently affordable instrument can become expensive when low volumes lead to reagent wastage or a single unavailable consumable interrupts testing.
Compare cost per reportable result using your actual workload and the laboratory’s quality programme. A supplier’s theoretical throughput does not account for every repeat, calibration, control run or interruption.
Plan the room and the installation
Provide a floor plan and information about power quality, backup power, ventilation, water, drainage and bench space. The responsible laboratory professional should determine workflow and biosafety requirements. Installation should include the agreed incoming checks, setup, operator training, records and acceptance criteria, rather than only unpacking the instrument.
For a multi-site project, identify who signs off each installation and who maintains the asset register. Specify the format in which results must transfer to your laboratory information system and whether integration is included.
Verify documentation and service coverage
Request the exact manufacturer, model, intended use and applicable Nigerian regulatory documentation. Use NAFDAC’s medical-device guidance to establish the current requirements for the particular product. Registration of one product does not establish approval of an entire supplier catalogue.
Define service response, preventive maintenance, spare parts, software licences and warranty exclusions in writing. A competent laboratory team must establish suitability and quality assurance before clinical use.
Can Wigmore quote a complete lab setup?
Send the approved equipment schedule, facility readiness, city, target opening date and required installation scope. We can assess procurement and logistics options and identify information needed for a comparable quotation.
Should a startup buy every analyzer immediately?
Phase equipment around a validated service plan. Discuss referral arrangements and expansion with your clinical and laboratory leadership before choosing capacity.
Prepare your equipment enquiry
Note the intended application, delivery location, quantities, target dates and required support. Include an approved specification or describe the work the equipment must perform. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions and identify the person responsible for technical acceptance.
This checklist helps you prepare a brief; it does not submit information. Start with non-confidential project details. Do not include patient or student records, credentials or private financial documents in a general sales enquiry.
