Medical imaging equipment must fit the clinical service, the building and the support resources available after installation. A scanner that looks attractive on price can become a difficult project if power, room design, access or maintenance requirements are discovered after purchase.
Wigmore Trading welcomes sourcing and project-procurement enquiries for imaging equipment in Nigeria and other African markets. Share the specification approved by your clinical and technical teams so we can assess equipment supply, shipping and associated support requirements.
Separate the imaging modalities
Ultrasound, X-ray, CT and MRI serve different purposes and bring different facility requirements. Compare products within the intended modality and clinical application. For portable ultrasound, specify the probes, examinations, reporting features and accessories required; a general description of “handheld ultrasound” is insufficient.
| Modality | Procurement issues to resolve |
|---|---|
| Ultrasound | Clinical applications, probes, software packages and cleaning compatibility |
| X-ray and CT | Radiation protection, facility authorisation, room design and acceptance testing |
| MRI | Site engineering, magnetic safety, access, power and maintenance requirements |
| Mobile systems | Transport, operating location, power and appropriate clinical supervision |
Survey the site before final selection
Provide room dimensions, delivery access, floor loading information where relevant and available utilities. The responsible specialists should establish the final civil, structural, electrical and environmental requirements. Consider whether large components can reach the room through existing doors and corridors.
Agree who supplies shielding, room preparation, cooling, backup power and any specialist installation works. Record these responsibilities alongside the equipment quotation so an excluded building requirement does not appear as a surprise cost.
Understand the regulatory pathway
Check applicable device documentation with NAFDAC. For ionising-radiation facilities, consult the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority’s diagnostic radiology requirements. MRI and ultrasound should not be treated as ionising-radiation systems simply because they are imaging equipment.
Equipment purchase is not a substitute for facility authorisation, professional staffing or the required technical acceptance process. Agree the responsible applicant and technical advisers before committing to a project schedule.
Compare lifecycle costs
Ask for the manufacturer, model, age and condition of the system. For refurbished equipment, obtain a clear account of refurbishment, replaced components, software rights, service history and remaining support. Do not treat “refurbished” as a uniform quality grade.
Include installation, testing, user training, probes or detectors, service arrangements and significant replacement items in the comparison. Define response coverage and the treatment of travel, parts, software and consumables under the proposed warranty or service agreement.
Can I obtain an immediate fixed price?
A meaningful quotation needs the exact configuration, condition, destination and installation scope. Wigmore can help structure the enquiry and assess available sourcing options.
Is the lowest equipment price the lowest project cost?
Not necessarily. Room works, logistics, downtime exposure and support can materially change the commercial comparison. Evaluate the complete facility-ready package with your technical team.
Prepare your equipment enquiry
Note the intended application, delivery location, quantities, target dates and required support. Include an approved specification or describe the work the equipment must perform. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions and identify the person responsible for technical acceptance.
This checklist helps you prepare a brief; it does not submit information. Start with non-confidential project details. Do not include patient or student records, credentials or private financial documents in a general sales enquiry.
