A school device programme should solve a teaching problem: access to learning materials, digital skills, supervised research or a defined classroom activity. Choosing the cheapest tablet or the highest advertised specification without that purpose can lead to unused equipment.
Wigmore Trading supports sourcing enquiries for student tablets, education laptops and school computer labs in Nigeria and Africa. We help institutions translate an approved learning plan into an equipment, delivery and support brief.
Define how learners will use the devices
Establish learner age, curriculum, applications, class size and whether devices are shared or assigned individually. Identify accessibility needs and the language and licensing of learning materials. A browser-based activity, offline reading library and specialist computing course have different requirements.
| Option | Questions for the school |
|---|---|
| Student tablets | Content, screen size, protective cases, charging and device management |
| School laptops | Software, keyboard work, operating system and repairability |
| Computer lab | Workstations, network, power, room layout and supervision |
| Offline learning devices | Content rights, updates, local access and teacher workflow |
Budget for the complete programme
Include protective accessories, charging, furniture, networking, software licences, teacher support and replacement devices. A low unit price is not necessarily a low lifecycle cost if batteries, screens or spare parts are difficult to obtain.
Specify the actual model and configuration rather than accepting an undefined substitution. For refurbished equipment, agree condition, battery expectations, software rights, warranty and incoming acceptance checks.
Plan the lab and charging arrangements
Assess electrical capacity, backup power, secure storage, ventilation and the layout of desks and cables. The responsible technical team should establish safe installation and appropriate network design. Consider how all devices will be charged between sessions without disrupting teaching.
For multiple schools, standardise asset labels, acceptance records and the process for reporting faults. A consistent configuration makes training and spare-parts management easier.
Protect learners and school data
Define user accounts, permissions, device-management settings and approved content. Establish appropriate privacy and safeguarding arrangements with the school’s advisers. A device programme should not depend on uncontrolled personal accounts or unnecessary collection of children’s information.
Decide who administers updates, removes access and handles lost devices. Keep technical ownership with the institution rather than an individual staff member’s private account.
Pilot before scaling
UNESCO’s education-technology guidance emphasises learner needs and appropriate, equitable and sustainable use. A supervised pilot can test whether the chosen equipment and content fit the school before a wider rollout.
Agree what success means: reliable access, teacher usability, lesson completion and manageable support. Avoid unsupported guarantees that equipment alone will improve examination results.
Can Wigmore supply a complete computer lab?
Send the learner numbers, software, workstation schedule, room information and installation requirements. We can assess equipment and logistics options for the defined project.
Are affordable devices always the best choice?
Compare fitness for purpose, support and lifecycle cost. The right device is the one the institution can use and maintain effectively.
Prepare your equipment enquiry
Note the intended application, delivery location, quantities, target dates and required support. Include an approved specification or describe the work the equipment must perform. Separate confirmed requirements from assumptions and identify the person responsible for technical acceptance.
This checklist helps you prepare a brief; it does not submit information. Start with non-confidential project details. Do not include patient or student records, credentials or private financial documents in a general sales enquiry.
